The American Board of Pediatrics
  • Established 1933
  • Purpose
  • To advance the science, study, and practice of
    pediatrics and to provide assurance to the public
    and the profession that those individuals
    certified have successfully completed an
    accredited educational program and various
    evaluations, including an examination, and
    possess the knowledge, skills, and experience
    requisite to the provision of high-quality care
    in pediatrics.

Accreditation vs Certification
  • Accreditation
  • The process by which residency programs in the
    various specialties are reviewed by an outside
    agency (the Residency Review Committee for each
    specialty) to ensure that they are meeting
    certain pre-specified criteria
  • Certification
  • The process by which individuals are evaluated
    after training to determine whether or not they
    meet the standards set forth by the boards for
    certified specialists

  • Part of the certifying process
  • PDs and faculty are key in determining who is
    eligible for the examination

In-Training Evaluation Issues
  • ABP asks PDs for end of year evaluation in two
    areas clinical competence professionalism
  • Unsatisfactory evaluation means resident receives
    no credit for year must repeat
  • Unsatisfactory in professionalism alone at ABPs
    discretion and PDs recommendation, a period of
    observation in lieu of a repeat year
  • Marginal if resident receives 2 consecutive
    marginal ratings must repeat the latter year

Verification of Clinical Competence Form
  • Form asks for verification of training dates
  • Areas to be evaluated
  • patient care
  • medical knowledge
  • interpersonal and communication skills

  • Satisfactory evaluation in all areas of clinical
    competence required

In-Training Examination
  • Scheduled for second week of July each year
  • Assigned date is Tuesday, but program may
    administer exam on another day or days that week
  • Residents should be instructed not to share
    questions with peers who have not taken exam
  • Security of exam is a key priority!

In-Training Examination
  • Only residents in training may take exam
  • no graduates, residents rotating from other
    specialties, fellows, etc
  • Chief residents (PL-4s) may take exam if listed
    on tracking roster
  • Performance on exam provides information to
    program about cognitive knowledge of resident and
    program as a whole as well as reflecting
    likelihood of resident passing the certifying
    examination

Miscellaneous Items
  • ITE
  • ABP will no longer approve special test
    accommodations. Approval must be granted by
    program with no assurance that ABP will approve
    for certifying examination
  • Transfer
  • Upon request, ABP will release information
    regarding summary evaluations obtained through
    tracking, dates of training, and credit provided
  • Med-Peds Accreditation
  • Program requirements for combined training under
    review at ACGME
  • Expect programs to be accredited in mid-2006

Electronic Communication
  • ABP is increasing electronic and e-mail
    communications with candidates and program
    directors
  • Candidates must maintain both mailing address and
    e-mail address on file with ABP
  • As of 2004, GP certifying examination applicants
    must apply electronically and pay by credit card
  • Candidates will be able to log on to individual
    file (CPR) using a User ID and Password to view
    progress of application, letter of acceptance,
    and exam results
