CHIROPRACTICS ROLE IN PREVENTATIVE CARE

2
What is Chiropractic?
3
Chiropractic is a unique model of healthcare...
4
Today I want you to think of chiropractic and
dental care as being similar with focus on
preventative care.
  • If a patient avoids getting check-ups from
their dentist they are more likely to develop
severe tooth and gum disease that is more
difficult to treat and may require more
    extensive dental work.

5
  • If a patient avoids getting regular check-ups
from their chiropractor they are more likely to
develop a chronic condition that will be more
    difficult to treat.
  • Dentists describe good oral hygiene as
preventative care and not just avoiding
    toothaches.
  • Chiropractors describe good spinal hygiene as
preventative care and not just avoiding
    backaches.

6
Chiropractic care seeks to maximize the overall
function of the entire body
7
How does chiropractic care maximize function?
  • By addressing the human body as a whole system.
  • How.
  • By optimizing the mechanics of muscles and
    joints. (posture, exercise, flexibility)
  • By proper nutrition. (diet, supplementation)
  • By optimizing communication within the nervous
    system. (adjustment)

8
We are concerned about mechanical stresses
because
  • Uneven and improper stresses on the joints cause
    degeneration in all joint tissues
  • This results in abnormal activity in the nervous
system and an activation of the bodys alarm
    system
  • If left unchanged long enough, these mechanical
stresses can eventually cause pain and other
    symptoms

9
Something to think about.Your car will run even
if you dont change the oil...
  • After 15,000 miles, how well is it really running
even if the car appears to be fine?

10
If you have poor spinal mechanics, these changes
eventually affect nerves, muscles and other
tissues...
  • How well is your body really running?

11
Poor mechanics in your spine can lead to
  • Abnormal wear and tear (arthritic conditions)
  • Activation of the bodys alarm system
  • Poor posture
  • Reduced overall performance
  • All without symptoms!

12
If these problems are not addressed they can lead
to
  • Reduced movement and flexibilitymovement is
    life!
  • Degenerative processes
  • Pain syndromes

13
It is much easier to fix a small problem than it
is to wait...
14
NUTRITIONWe are concerned about nutrition
because
  • Proper nutrition promotes a healthy lifestyle by
providing the body with an essential balance of
    vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
  • This helps prevent
  • Heart Disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Sickness

15
What is good nutrition?
  • Protein (Fish, Poultry, Nuts, Legumes)
  • Carbohydrates (Complex, whole grains)
  • Fats (Omega-3,6,9 monounsaturated)
  • Fruits and vegetables (5-7 servings/day)
  • Water (8 - 8oz glasses a day)
  • Supplementation

16
Who needs good nutrition?
  • Children
  • Elderly
  • Athletes
  • Pregnant women
  • Everyone..

17
NERVOUS SYSTEMWe are concerned about the
nervous system because the nervous system
organizes, regulates and connects the functions
of the entire body.
18
  • The nervous system controls and coordinates
every cell, tissue and organ in the body. -
    Grays Anatomy

19
How?
  • By regulating information from the brain, spinal
    cord and the nerves
  • By maintaining pathways for this information
  • By acting as the center of thought, memory,
    learning, attention and consciousness

20
The Nervous System
  • Disturbances in the nervous system may cause or
aggravate disease processes in various parts or
    functions of the body
  • Disturbances of the nervous system may be caused
by derangements of the musculoskeletal system

21
Who should see a chiropractor?
  • Everyone should have their spine evaluated by a
    Doctor of Chiropractic.

22
WHY?
23
  • It is possible to be sick in the absence of
    symptoms
  • It is possible to be healthy in the presence of
    symptoms

24
For example
  • When would you normally make an appointment with
    your medical doctor?

25
when you are feeling sick. Most people
believe that theyre sick when they have symptoms
26
Symptoms
  • Often indicate a healthy response
  • Treating symptoms does not necessarily address
    the problem
  • Masking symptoms may delay appropriate treatment
  • Often delayed until significant damage has been
    donewhy wait?
  • Often absent in the presence of disease

27
So...
  • What is health?

28
HEALTH
  • A state of optimal physical, mental and social
well-being, and not merely the absence of disease
    and infirmity.
  • Dorlands Medical Dictionary, 28th ed., 1994

29
A good diet, exercise and positive mental
attitude along with chiropractic care can
optimize your bodys potential.
  • Improve your performance and experience life to
    the fullest.

30
Get into chiropractic care...
  • Why wait?
