Project Overview
  • Intended Use Open Liver Biopsy
  • Basic Functions
  • 1). Tissue excision
  • 2). Cauterization
  • 3). Biopsy Tissue Protection

3
Personal Responsibilities
  • Market Research
  • Initial LEC Design
  • Assist in Testing
  • Overall Design History File Update

4
Personal Milestones
  • Market Research Done
  • Initial LEC Blade Design Done
  • Assist in Prototype Testing March 28th April
    11th
  • Revise DHF Week of April 4th

5
Market Research
  • 25 million people in America are affected by
    acute and chronic liver disease
  • Liver biopsy is an essential tool in studying,
categorizing and eventually curing liver disease
  • There is an emerging need for a tool that will be
useful when spot-probe freezing has been used
    prior to biopsy
  • In 2001, alone, 262 million was spent on liver
    research

6
Initial LEC Blade Design
  • Geometric approach
  • 1. Triangle shape in order to excise the
  • tissue as a wedge
  • 2. Allows for a very sharp edge to prevent
  • tissue damage

7
Initial LEC Design
Blades
8
LEC Design Transition
9
Prototype Testing
  • Determine criteria to adjudicate success of
    prototype
  • Accuracy of cut
  • Speed of cauterization
  • Final temperature of biopsy tissue
  • Ease of use

10
Overall Design History File Update
  • Revise and Update file to confirm proper
development of the LEC Biopsy Tool

11
Acknowledgements
