• and how they are treated in our society

Disabled

• There are many disabled people living in the UK
• Disabled can include people who have a hearing or
  visual impairment
• Some disabled people feel they are treated
  unfairly and dont get the same chances as
  able-bodied people

Women

• Women make up 52 of the UK population
• Some people feel that women are discriminated
  against in our country eg employers
• Women are under-represented in certain jobs eg MPs

Ethnic Minorities

• Ethnic minorities are another group of people who
  can experience prejudice and discrimination
• Examples of people who are from ethnic minorities
  include the Asian community eg people originally
  from Pakistan or China

Prejudice

• This is a word which we will hear a lot in this
  unit
• Prejudice is when we judge someone unfairly
• Think of your own examples of prejudice

Discrimination

• This word means treating someone unfairly
• An example would be not renting a room to someone
  because of their religion
• Can you think of any examples of discrimination?

Stereotypes

• If we stereotype someone then we assume that they
  have particular characteristics as a group
• An example of this might be that all teenagers
  are moody or all teachers are crabbit!
