Title: Air Quality Assessment for Europe
1Air Quality Assessment for Europe From local to
continental scale The AIR4EU Project Peter
Builtjes
6th Framework Programme- Policy oriented
Research Priority 8.1 Topic 1.5 Task 2
2- AIR4EU is a EU 6th FP Project in support of the
CAFE-programme - AIR4EU started 1-1-2004 and will end 31-12-2006
- Research Partners TNO, NILU, Aristotle Univ.
Thess., Univ.Stuttgart, Univ. Hertfordshire,
Univ. Aveiro - User Partners Paris, Rome, London UK, Prague,
Athens, Rotterdam/Rijnmond, Olso, (Berlin)
3The Scope of AIR4EU
- To provide recommendations on integrated AQ
assessment for all relevant temporal and spatial
scales - Integrated means here Combining monitoring and
modelling in order to reduce uncertainties and to
achieve a more complete picture - Focus on PM, O3, NO2
- Focus on cities
4Final product of AIR4EU
- A guidance document on best practices for the
combined use of monitoring and modelling - Maps of air quality as examples, based on the
combination of monitoring and modelling - And also
- AIR4EU Documents and Reports
- Presentations at Conferences
- Double refereed papers
5Major Achievements
- Recommendations for integrated air quality
assessement on hot spot, urban and regional scale - Recommendations have been - as far as possible -
tested in Case Studies with the user partners - Uncertainty Assessment
- Air quality mapping tool
- Case studies
6Example results Ozone (ppb)
Ozone measurements from the EMEP network

10Case studies (2)
Paris Review of data assimilation methods
London Traffic management impact
SE England Impact of stack emissions in urban scale modelling
London Uncertainty in AQ assessment in London
Athens Assessment of PM levels and contributions in the Athens region
Europe Data assimilation with a regional scale model homogenous regional background for city assessment
Europe Statistical combination of modelling and monitoring on the European scale
Berlin Assessment of PM10 and NO2 levels in Berlin
11 Some final remarks
- The project aimed at recommendations/methods for
Air Quality Assessment, not evaluation of
abatement strategies, but the recommendations/meth
ods are there to be used in such evaluations - The integration methods are intended to be useful
in the future for combining modelling and
monitoring from both ground level and satellites
