5Why are we here?
- We want to encourage you in to the exciting world
of Engineering, Science and Technology
by.......... - having FUN
- Building a range of project kits
- Using a range of tools
- Helping and supporting each other and using team
working - Learning some fundamental engineering principles
- Respecting us and remembering that we are
volunteering to come here and share our
enthusiasm to help you
6What is an Engineer?
- Engineer is derived from the Latin word
ingeniousus meaning skilled. The word
ingenious is derived from the same word and an
engineer is indeed a - clever practical problem solver
- who uses ingenious solutions
- whos skill includes the used of scientific
methods - and has close connections with scientists and
artists
An example could be the many beautiful bridges
with great spans and the ability to carry huge
volumes of traffic. This is certainly an example
of the ingenious use of resources and there are
many more to choose from
7What everyday thingsdo Engineers get involved in?
- Think of the services that supply our house
- Gas, electricity, water, disposal of waste
think of the engineering that makes this all
possible - Things in our house
- Heating, telephones, washing machines, fridges,
cleaners, televisions, cookers, even carpets and
furniture have engineering systems behind them to
work - Things outside out house
- Roads, lorries, vans, buses, trains, cars,
bicycles. Roads are lit by street lighting, are
kept clear by drains that carry rain water away,
bridges, tunnels, traffic lights, islands,
junctions.
8What everyday thingsdo Engineers get involved in?
- What about bigger buildings and use of different
materials - Steel, glass, natural materials to create great
architecture - Connecting the world
- Aeroplanes, rockets, international space station,
satellites for monitoring weather and storms,
telecommunications, land erosion by the sea, loss
of forests world wide, e-mail, internet, radio,
television. Engineers are constantly improving
technologies and thinking of new and better ways
to connect people around the globe - Helping other people
- Hospitals, medical instruments, microscopic
cameras, lasers, artificial limbs
9What everyday thingsdo Engineers get involved in?
- Protecting the environment
- Thames barrier, stops the sea flooding London by
spanning the whole river. Engineers are actively
involved world wide with flood control and
disaster relief. - You find engineers improving recycling
techniques, designing more energy efficient cars,
appliances, protecting water, developing farming
techniques. - Engineering is critical in making cleaner, safer
technologies less expensive and more readily
available helping everyone to do more to
protect our environment
10What everyday thingsdo Engineers get involved in?
- In summary
- Engineers are into everything! Offers more career
opportunities than any other discipline. Its a
profession that can take you from the ocean to
far reaches of outer space. - Engineers are problem solvers who search for
quicker, better and less expensive ways to use
the forces and materials of nature to meet
today's challenges

13What happens in our club?
- In our club
- You will make many working models that become
more challenging - You can take them home to show your family
- Your skills will improve
- You will use engineering tools to build them
- Your mums and dads are welcome to help us
- What we expect of you
- That you must listen to our instructions for your
own safety
