Title: Writing a Resolution

1
Writing a Resolution
  • A brief overview

2
What is a Resolution?
  • Resolutions are documents that identify matters
of importance and relevance to nursing students
and the nursing profession as a whole.
  • Furthermore, resolutions are documents that
become the basis of policies, priorities, and
actions of the organization in which it was
    passed.

3
The Body of a Resolution
  • Resolutions contain whereas and resolved
    statements.
  • Whereas statements summarizes documentation that
    supports the resolution.
  • The resolved statement defines the position that
the author is taking on the issue.

4
The Beginning of the Process
  • Start by researching a topic that is pertinent to
    you the author.
  • Make sure that the topic is within the scope of
CNSA and NSNA purposes and feasible to
    implement.
  • Research previous resolutions and identify that
the topic has not been addressed within the last
    five years.
  • If a similar topic was addressed prior to five
years ago the resolution must make a statement of
reaffirmation of any previous written article.

5
Researching the Topics
  • If your resolution pertains to California and is
not national in scope, you only need to research
    previous CNSA resolutions.
  • If your resolution pertains to both the state and
is national in scope, plan to research previous
article from both the CNSA and NSNA websites.

6
Documentation for the Whereas Statements
  • Documentation can be found from a wealth of
sources including journal articles, web site
articles, text and reference books, materials
from other organizations, and speeches, as well
    as research experiences.
  • The documentation should be no more than five
years old unless it is historical in nature.
  • Documentation should be written in the American
    Psychological Association (APA) format.

7
Writing the First Resolved Statement
  • The first resolved statement defines the purpose
    of the resolution.
  • It also identifies the stance that the author
wants CNSA to take on the issue.

8
Subsequent Resolved Statements
  • The following resolved statements identify the
ways in which the author would like to implement
    the resolution.
  • Typical requests include publication of
information pertaining to the resolution in the
Range of motion, the development of a committee
or a project, and the dissemination of the
resolution to pertinent organizations or agencies.

9
Things to Keep in Mind
  • Try to limit yourself to five whereas clauses in
    the interest of time.
  • Make sure the resolved statements are realistic
enough for CNSA to feasibly implement.

10
Proofreading and Preparation for Presenting
  • Try to have multiple faculty members and students
    proofread the article.
  • The purpose of this is to refine the position,
identify opposing arguments, and help correct
    grammatical errors.
