2What's important to the Canoeist
- Temagami is more than "just another canoe area"
- Canoeists' Values
- intact Nature
- intact Routes
- no Intrusions
3Temagami is Unique
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - large stands of old growth pine
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- a place where native culture can be touched
4Temagami is Unique(Cont.)
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- Hap Wilson's routes
- plus old Nastawgans
- Temagami has the potential to be recognized as
the world's best canoe area - connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - large stands of old growth pine
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- a place where native culture can be touched
5Temagami is Unique(Cont.)
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - Kipawa R and Ottawa R to Quebec
- Larder R to towards James Bay
- Wanapitei and W Montreal R to the West
- Sturgeon R and Ottawa R to the South
- an effort must be made to keep these connections
in- and outside of the TIP area - large stands of old growth pine
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- a place where native culture can be touched
6Temagami is Unique(Cont.)
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - large stands of old growth pine
- such stands are getting rare
- they will be worth more standing alive than cut
(tourism, science, maybe even survival of such
ecosystems) - preserve these stands for the future
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- a place where native culture can be touched
7Temagami is Unique(Cont.)
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - large stands of old growth pine
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- already now a spill-over area for Algonquin and
other southern parks - future road improvements will "shorten" the
distance further - look 50 or 100 years ahead - one large urban area
that needs room for recreation - a place where native culture can be touched
8Temagami is Unique(Cont.)
- over 25 large coherent canoe routes
- connected - intact canoe routes lead off into the
rest of Canada - large stands of old growth pine
- easy to reach from Ontario's mega centres
- a place where native culture can be touched
- a large number of pictographs and spiritual sites
- the old trails documented and mapped
- a First Nation community that has managed to
interact with the canoeing community - support FN requests to make greater allowance for
spiritual values
9Temagami is Unique
