What is College Bowl?
  • College Bowl is a question and answer game of
general knowledge and quick recall. It spotlights
the fastest minds on campus as they excel on the
    playing field of knowledge.
  • College Bowl questions cover every conceivable
    topic, from history, literature, science,
    multiculturalism, religion and geography to
current events, the arts, social sciences, sports
    and popular culture.

3
ACUI's Role
  • The Association of College Unions International
    (ACUI)
  • a non-profit higher education network of nearly
    4,000 individual members.
  • urban and rural campuses
  • four-year and two-year schools
  • large and small universities and international
    affiliates
  • helps college unions and student activities
professionals improve their programs and services
and to be effective contributors to individual
    growth and development.
  • Relationship dates back to 1976 when the College
Bowl Campus Program was inaugurated, with ACUI
    serving as CB's educational partner.
  • ACUI provides a direct link to its member
campuses and provides a significant volunteer
pool which helps organize and administer the
College Bowl program...on campus, at Regionals
and at the National Championship Tournament
    (NCT).
  • ACUI's Committee and Regional structure is
    integral to College Bowl's success.
  • Offering some 400 ACUI volunteers in a variety
    of capacities
  • Game officials
  • Tournament officials
  • Hosts
  • College Bowl Program Group members
  • Regional Coordinators.

4
Format/Game Overview
  • Two teams of four players each
  • Points are scored by correctly answering
    questions asked by the Moderator
  • Two Question types Toss-Ups (10 points)
    Bonuses (20-30 points each)
  • Incorrect Interruptions (-5 points)
  • Two 7 minute halves
  • Sudden Death playoff if score is tied

5
Answering Toss Ups
  • Players must signal and WAIT to be recognized
  • Players have 3 seconds from the time the
moderator finishes reading to signal and must
    answer immediately once recognized
  • Correct answers move on to Bonus Question
  • Incorrect answers cause the question to move to
    the other team
  • They must still signal and be recognized

6
  • The reading of a Toss-Up may be interrupted
before the Moderator has completed it. Once the
player has signaled, the Moderator stops reading.
The player is recognized and given the
    opportunity to answer.
  • If the answer is correct, the team earns 10
points and a chance at the Bonus question. If the
answer is incorrect, the team is penalized 5
points and the question is finished for the other
team. The Moderator should not re-read the entire
question for the other team, but should pick it
    up from a logical point.
  • There is only one 5 point penalty per question.
  • On a Toss-Up, an answer given before a player is
  • recognized is considered incorrect. If it is the
    first team to signal,
  • the question is turned over to the other team.

7
  • If a player does not answer immediately, a Game
Official calls "time." An answer given after time
has been called does not count. When applicable,
the question is turned over to the other team.
  • If a player confers with a teammate on a Toss-Up
question, the answer is disqualified, even if it
was correct. Obvious non-verbal cues are
    considered conferring. Where applicable, the
question is turned over to the other team.
  • If the half or game ends while the Moderator is
reading a Toss-Up, the game stops there, without
giving either team a chance to respond. However,
if a player on either team has signaled before
the whistle, s/he is recognized and may answer.
There is no Bonus question given in this
situation, nor is the question turned over.

8
Bonus Questions
  • Toss-Up is correct
  • On Bonus questions all team members should
    confer.
  • The team is given 5 seconds to confer on a Bonus.
  • If a Bonus has several parts that are numbered
and are to be asked separately, the Moderator
will allow 5 seconds per part for the team to
confer before prompting the team. The Moderator
will also give the correct answer after each
    part.
  • If a Bonus calls for two or more answers within a
single- part question, the Moderator will allow
only the initial 5 seconds for the team to begin
    its answer.
  • If the half or game ends while the Moderator is
reading a Bonus, the game stops there, without
giving the team a chance to respond.
  • However, if the team has begun its answer, they
    may
  • continue. If the question was read in one part,
the team may complete the answer.
