A Successful Crossing to NEMS

What does the middle school schedule look like?
  • School begins at 735 and ends at 238.
    (Wednesday ends at 248)
  • There are 5 classes (Math, Science, Social
Studies, Language Arts, Fine and Practical
    Arts/Physical Education) that are approximately
60 minutes long. There is also an
    Enrichment/Intervention period for 45 minutes
    each day.
  • The order of classes changes daily.

3
How are schedules assigned?
  • Student schedules will be developed from
information provided by the elementary schools.
  • Students who have been identified as Challenge
Students are grouped into Clusters and their
needs addressed in the general education
classroom in conjunction with the Challenge
    teacher.
  • Students who have been identified as Special
Education students are grouped into Clusters and
their needs addressed in the general education
    classroom and flexible grouping.
  • Class sizes range from 20 to 35.
  • We have several co-taught classes.

4
What is difference between Fine and Practical
Arts and Specials?
  • Fine and Practical Arts are Music, Health and
Human Services, Art, Computers, and Tech Ed.
  • Each of these classes last for 18 days.

5
How is Physical Education different?
  • Students will have Physical Education every other
day throughout the entire school year.
  • Students are expected to dress in a Physical
Education uniform each day for class. They are
also expected to have appropriate shoes.
  • Students should bring pencil and paper to
    physical education class as well.
  • Students are expected to participate in all
activities to the best of their ability.

6
Will the cafeteria work the same way?
  • Students will be assigned an account number, like
    in elementary school.
  • Students will have the usual lunch choice and can
then supplement their lunch with snacks and
    juices.
  • Students receiving free and reduced lunch in
elementary school will receive free and reduced
lunch in middle school until the forms have been
    turned in.

7
How much homework should I expect?
  • Homework may be assigned every night. There will
be Math and Language Arts homework every night at
    least.
  • Very rarely will homework assignments be
completed during the school day. (No Study Hall)
  • Long Term projects may be assigned on top of
    regular assignments.
  • The key to being successful is writing down all
assignments in your assignment book and making a
    schedule.

8
How do I get in touch with teachers?
  • E-mail
  • Phone Calls
  • Notes in the planner (assignment book)
  • Parent Teacher Conferences (schedule through the
    guidance office)
  • Parent Teacher Conference Night

How can I stay on top of events at NEMS?
  • Web Site (The website is updated as time permits,
therefore does not always reflect all events.)
  • The sign at the front of the building
  • Newsletters (sent home with interims or report
    cards, quarterly)
  • County Calendar

10
Lockers
  • Students are assigned a locker for their personal
    use.
  • Students are not to share lockers.
  • There are set locker times throughout the day.

11
When will I find out the Bus Schedule?
  • Bus Routes and Pick up times will be mailed to
your house prior to the start of school.
Specific bus questions should be directed to the
    CCPS transportation office.
  • Students must ride their assigned bus. They will
not be permitted to ride a bus with a friend for
    any reason.

12
Curriculum
  • In middle school there is more emphasis placed on
    content knowledge.
  • County Produced Tests in Language Arts, Math, and
    Science.
  • Emphasis is placed on deadlines. Late
    assignments are penalized.

What is this about a week long field trip?
  • Every 6th grader has the opportunity to attend
North Bay, an outdoor adventure learning
    experience.
  • September 24 - 28, 2007

14
JUMPSTART

building, practice with lockers, learn to read a
