    Student Health Programs (SHP)

  • Sample of Convenience, 3 sections HED 101
  • Total of 55 participants
  • Representative of all undergraduate classes
  • 62 Female, 37 Male
  • Instrument
  • Student awareness of SHP programs
  • Total of seven parts
  • Media source, knowledge/utilization of SHP,
    recommendations for SHP, demographics
  • Likert scale, yes/no questions
  • Instrument Reliability using Cronbach alpha and
    Kuder Richardson analysis

  • TA of HED 101 chosen at random
  • Administered to three sections of HED 101
  • Administered by Teaching Assistant
  • Given to students to complete during the first 15
    minutes of class
  • Data Analysis
  • Response data compiled using Microsoft Excel
  • Individual and Group Descriptive Statistics
  • Summed totals, means, median, SD, item variance
  • Cronbach alpha and Kuder Richardson reliability.

  • 78 aware of usage after refund
  • High awareness
  • SHAC, pharmacy, and immunization
  • Low awareness
  • Location of health services, summer/graduating
    optional coverage, mental health clinic,
    laboratory services, SHP website, emergency and
    after hours care, and STD services

  • 69 dont know location of every service
  • 22 would not seek treatment from SHP
  • Take care of self
  • See a private physician at home or in town
  • Have not been ill while at SIUC
  • Covered by parents insurance
  • Appointment times not convenient
  • Use hospital emergency room
  • Access, location, not convenient
  • Have concerns about confidentiality

Conclusions
  • Majority of students were aware of available SHP
    services
  • No preference was stated in changing the actual
    names of the services or clinics
  • One main phone number to call for appointments
    would be helpful
  • Students would like different hours that they
    could visit/use SHP services

    from professionals
  • A class or seminar discussing available services
    would be helpful
  • Majority of students were unaware of the
    existence of the SHP website
  • Unaware of emergency and after hours care
    available services and options

Recommendations
  • Mandatory Orientation Seminar
  • Numerous 50 minute seminars for all incoming
    students
  • Register for seminar upon class registration
  • Cover key points of recommendations

  • Annual one hour seminar for all SHP staff
  • Concentrate on
  • Initiating conversations with students
  • Answering questions
  • Provide additional resources
  • Content in ten key health topics
