Title: CoSMiC

1
CoSMiC
  • Human level of our vision of a developing
    Scottish Co-operative Infrastructure, based on
CAIRNS, SLAINTE, SCONE, SEED, Regional, Sectoral,
    and Domain-based Co-operation, CoSMiC itself, A
Scottish Portal (HILT, CORC), and The Scottish
    Portals Initiative
  • Dennis Nicholson,
  • Centre for Digital Library Research

2
Elements of the Vision
  • Scottish distributed union catalogue
  • Cross-sectoral and cross-domain
  • Hard-copy and electronic resources
  • Dynamic clumper based navigation
  • Associated CCM same database
  • Every kind of user, adaptively
  • User Landscape Control for staff
  • Interoperability standards, CoSMiC

3
Key Elements 1. CAIRNS
  • Embryonic distributed catalogue service single
    user interface subject-based dynamic-clumping
  • Includes Universities, SLAINTE, NLS, BUBL LINK,
    GDL,
  • Work with NGfL, SCRAN, SCAN
  • Collections database expansion needed Zservers,
    collections only

4
Key Elements, 2
  • SCONE, SEED the focus for this expansion of
    collections database
  • Will also provide tools to support CCM, landscape
    control SCAMP
  • SCONE HE and FE
  • SEED Public Libraries
  • Both linking CCM, user navigation, and staff
    landscape control

5
Key Elements, 3
  • CoSMiC The Confederation of Scottish Mini-Clumps
(Founders ALF, SESLIN, TAFLIN, GDL, others)
  • A standards-based Scotland-wide co-operative
    catalogue and collaborative collection management
programme needs co-ordination at human level
  • Hope is that CoSMiC will provide it

6
Scottish Portal Project
  • Small start up project, SLIC
  • Begin to build a Scottish Portal from CAIRNS and
    SLAINTE
  • Focus particularly on requirements for bringing
    in FE, Public Libraries
  • Look at a co-operative approach to cataloguing
    electronic resources (CORC)

7
A Scottish Portal?
  • Easy user access to all Scottish networked
    information, learning and research services
  • Ability to see and cross-search selective views
of these e.g. just those catalogues strong in
    history, in Ayrshire, covering electronic
services, FE, HE, public libraries, for secondary
    school pupils, etc

8
A Scottish Portal
  • A terminologies mapping service to facilitate
cross searching by subject where different
schemes are in use (HILT Project)
  • Different interface views for different user,
    educational levels
  • Staff control of these information landscapes
via a staff portal to the collection description
    database

9
And, of course...
  • Human and organisation level co-ordination,
    co-operation and control through CoSMiC

10
Joining up is easy ...
  • Services can join portal by
  • Adding Collection level information
  • Or that plus telnet or webpac
  • Or becoming cross-searchable needs MARC, AACR2,
CAIRNS Cataloguing and Indexing Standards, Z39.50
  • Organisations can join by working within CoSMiC

11
But...
  • Because of a range of potential problems in areas
    like
  • Cataloguing and indexing problems, Different
    record formats, Collection description standards,
    Different subject schemes, Varied Z39.50
    implementations, Categorising users
  • .getting it right is hard
  • At least, it is...

12
Unless we can
  • Agree a joint approach
  • Work together
  • Build on our successes
  • Pool our resources
  • Jointly make the case for future development
  • Promote the relevant standards
  • In short, unless we work together

13
Scottish Portals Initiative
  • If you want to build your own portal, you can
    still benefit from the co-operative
    infrastructure, either
  • Let us generate your portal dynamically
  • Or build your own but dont duplicate effort Z
    addresses, collections database etc.
  • Work within CoSMiC

14
CoSMiC Reminder
  • The Confederation of Scottish Mini-Clumps(CoSMiC)
initiative (Founders ALF, SESLIN, TAFLIN etc.)
  • A standards-based Scotland-wide co-operative
    catalogue and collaborative collection management
programme needs co-ordination at human level
  • Hope is that CoSMiC will provide it

15
CoSMiC
  • .by co-ordinating activities at regional,
    sectoral, domain and national level
  • .allowing a different vision for each sector or
domain or region or whatever (electronic
    resources?)
  • facilitating collaborative collecting, user
landscape control through the SCONE staff portal

16
Where to next?
  • Task Group list of issues
  • CoSMiC workshop in September
  • SPI leaflet
  • CORC and the Scottish Portal are coming
  • Information for Scotland
  • Scotslink_at_jiscmail.ac.uk
