Adjustment to First Grade
  • Long day based on the teachers agenda
  • Children may be tired
  • Morning is packed with direct instruction
  • Afternoon is less structured
  • Children may be anxious or teary during the first
    long days, weeks of school
  • Some children may have a delayed adjustment

Making the Transition Easier
  • Come to the Meet and Greet Day
  • Practice walking the route to your childs
    classroom
  • Begin a more consistent bedtime schedule 1-2
    weeks before school starts
  • Teach responsible behavior at home by giving your
    child simple jobs
  • Model a positive attitude towards school
  • Come to Parent Orientation and Open House

Parent/ Student Responsibilities
  • Snack and Lunch
  • Snack is eaten everyday in the classroom.
  • Please have your child bring in a healthy snack
    (fruit, vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers)
    and a water bottle.
  • Snack is very important since they do not eat
    lunch until 1245pm.
  • If your child forgets their snack, we cannot
    provide a snack for them.
  • For lunch they can bring their own lunch or buy
    lunch.
  • Milk is a part of hot lunch, however they can buy
    milk separately if they bring their lunch.
  • Buying lunch tickets is helpful. You can buy
    multiple lunch tickets. Please write your
    childs name each ticket.

  • Label Belongings
  • Label coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats,
    mittens, pencil boxes, poetry binder and folders.
  • Toys
  • Toys are not allowed in school. They can be
    easily lost and are a big distraction.

  • Homework
  • Your child is responsible for doing their
    homework each week.
  • Please set up a quiet area for your child where
    they can do their homework.
  • Create a routine for when your child does their
    homework each day, such as after dinner.
  • Please check over your childs homework to make
    sure it is complete.
  • Reading is a part of homework, please read to
    your child, partner read or have them read to
    themselves for at least 15 minutes each night.

SUPPLIES
  • Supply list will go home with placement letters
    in July.
  • Backpack should be an appropriate size for your
    child. No backpacks with wheels!
  • All supplies may be brought to school the day
    before school starts at the Meet and Greet.
  • Pencil Box 8 X 5 Contains 2 sharpened
    pencils, 24 crayons in a zip lock bag, 2 glue
    sticks and scissors.
  • 1-inch Blue binder for Poetry

  • Assess all Grade 1 students
  • Instruct small groups of students
  • Monitor student progress
  • Support literacy instruction in classrooms
  • Participate in the school Student Study Team
  • Conduct formal evaluations
  • Consult with parents and teachers
