What is phonological awareness?

• Phonological awareness is an awareness of the
  multiple units of oral languagean understanding
  that oral language consists of sentences,
  sentences consist of words, words consist of
  syllables, and syllables consist of sound chunks.

What is phonemic awareness

• Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear,
  identify, and manipulate individual sounds
  (phonemes) in spoken words.

How can I help my child?

• Play with language
• Talk with them
• Count words in a sentence
• Count sounds in words
• Isolate sounds in words
• Replace sounds in words
• Match sounds to letters

Read to Your Child Daily

• When reading you can point to words as you read
  allowing your child to observe left to right
  progression and make a voice print match. You
  can help your child to focus on initial sound and
  match the letter connected to that sound.

Phonics

• Phonics is a method of teaching children to read
  and spell that stresses basic symbol -sound
  relationships and their application to decoding
  words. Decodable books are used for reading
  phonetically in the early stages. (Bob Books)

Guided Reading

• Guided reading is another method of teaching your
  child to read by using picture clues, high
  frequency words, and predictable text. (Dick and
  Jane) Guided reading books are leveled using the
  alphabet aa-z.

How do we assess phonemic awareness with DIBELS?

• Initial Sound Fluency
• Ex. What sound does mouse start with?
• Phoneme Segmentation Fluency
• Ex. Tell me all the sounds you hear in leap.
• Nonsense Word Fluency
• Ex. sim, lut, hup

  sentences, and books.
• Talk to your childs teacher about any concerns
  or questions.
