  • Approximately 2,500 middle and high schools in
    California
  • Approximately 340 middle and high schools were
    eligible to apply250 applications received.

  • 3. Closing the Achievement Gap Schools must
    meet one of the following criteria
  • At least one of the following significant diverse
    subgroups API grew faster than the white or
    Asian subgroup.
  • African America, Hispanic, Socioeconomically
    Disadvantaged, or English Language Learners
  • b. Schools with significant diverse subgroup/s,
    along with white and/or Asian significant
    subgroup/s, and all subgroups are at or above 800.

    subgroups and have at least one of the following
    significant subgroups with API growth of target
    one.

    need based on qualitative and/or quantitative
    data and process to identify appropriate
    practice.

    resources, staff, P16 theme, Aiming High or
    TCSII, professional development, instructional
    strategies, implementation, etc.
  • ResultsImpact on target group, assessment
    process, outcomes, projected next steps

    two educators.

    completeness in each of the three areas
    Rationale/Basis of Practice, Practice
    Description, and Program Results
  • Submissions were deemed either complete or
    incomplete. Submissions are not scored.

  • Required for final selection of California
    Distinguished Schools
  • Mission of the visit is to validate the full
    implementation and details of the signature
    practices as describe in the schools
    application.
  • Statewide nominees receive information in
    preparation for the site validation visits

  • Validation Visits include
  • Interviews with constituency groups including
    staff, parents, community partners, students,
    etc.
  • Review of additional documentation and artifacts
    that support the schools application
  • Classroom observations
  • Shadowing student(s) participating in the
    signature practice

Site Validation County Responsibilities
  • County Offices of Education coordinate site
    validations including
  • Scheduling visits with schools
  • Providing principals with site visit documents
  • Forming and training teams comprised primarily of
    local educators
  • Submitting Site Validation Reports to the
    California Department of Education

  • Team leaders will contact the schools in advance
    to coordinate the details of the visit.

  • Students to shadow
  • Team leaders will read applications and develop
    appropriate questions for interviews.

    coordinate visit and interview questions.
