Title: Using Technology on

1
Using Technology on both sides of the desk to
improve Student Achievement
  • CoSNs 9th Annual K-12 School Networking
    Conference
  • March, 2004

2
NCLBSection 2416 specifically states
  • Schools should use technology to "develop or
expand efforts to connect schools and teachers
with parents and students to promote meaningful
    parental involvement, to foster increased
    communication about curricula, assignments, and
    assessments between students, parents, and
teachers, and to assist parents to understand the
technology being applied in their child's
education, so that parents are able to reinforce
at home the instruction their child receives at
    school."

3
The Essential Question
Where do we find the motivations we need to
improve Student Achievement?
How do we improve Student Achievement?
4
Technology
Provide tools for learning that students like and
relate to in their worlds
5
But
  • Teachers have to be there too!!

Skills
Applications

Higher Order Thinking
7
Develop Applications for Technology
  • Create curriculum driven technology experiences
    for students
  • Insure a uniform application of technology for
    students
  • Empower teachers and students with web based
    tools
  • Attack both sides of the desk
  • Teacher tools
  • Student tools

    lesson database
  • Phase III Student portfolios pilots 2003-04
  • Phase IV Student portfolios/tools Grades 4-12
    2004-05

9
Template Based Web Tools
  • Low TCO
  • Eligible for Erate funding
  • Encourages extended access (students and
    teachers)
  • Broadens the audience

10
Phase I Teacher Web Sites
  • Introduce sites to teachers
  • Train
  • Pre-test and post test data

Student web based tools can
  • Collect and store best work
  • Encourage quality as the audience increases
  • Encourage ownership of work
  • Encourage parental involvement
  • Encourage student reflection
  • Peer review/teacher comments
  • Allow students to gather all types of work, from
    writing to pieces of art
  • Broaden the audience for the publishing phase of
the writing process beyond the teacher and
assorted classmates - because of this broader
audience, students are motivated to revise and
edit more thoroughly with so many more people
    able to view their work

25
Tools that helped this work
  • Create a How-To section on the website
  • Teacher web page help/drop in sessions
  • Teacher leaders in buildings to provide
    assistance ()
  • Allowing teachers remote access to our system
    (Citrix NFuse)
  • Participating in Microsoft Work at Home program
    7 Office CD

Teachers Comments
  • Electronic portfolio allows students to gather
their best writing in an 'easy to manage'
fashion. They can access/update their portfolios
from school and home, and it is very easy for
    students to add new pieces.
  • The Portfolio is something that can be used in
the students application process to colleges. It
    is neat and easily accessible.
  • It allows the children to create meaning out of
the information - it a constructivist approach to
    learning.
  • The teacher isn't the vehicle for instruction -
the children's learning is dependent upon their
    own ability and their peers.
  • The children are highly motivated and do work on
    their own time.
  • Because of this broader audience, students are
motivated to revise and edit more thoroughly with
so many more people able to view their work
  • People who view the portfolio can interact with
the writer through the comment windows creating a
    dialogue about student writing
  • Within the portfolio, students reflect on their
writing to monitor their own growth as a writer.
By becoming more self-aware about their writing,
they can apply their strengths about writing to
    the next piece they write
