Title: Speaking and Listening

1
Speaking and Listening
  • Its so important it gets its own Power Point!

2
The SpeakerYep, Thats You!
  • Sometimes the speaker (or the person giving the
speech) gets a little scared of the feedback they
are going to receive. In general, there are five
things that people do to deny the criticism
  • Projectionput the blame elsewhere.
  • Escapesimply to deny reality.
  • Rationalizationtrying to explain away a poor
    speech.
  • Back stepbasically, talking back to criticism.
  • Repressionaccidentally forgetting a negative
    comment

3
Factors that Affect Listening
  • Your physical and mental state
  • Speaker
  • Your prejudices
  • Environment

4
Listening Critically
  • Identify the speakers goal
  • Identify the main ideas
  • Identify the supporting details
  • Use context clues
  • Take advantage of nonverbal cues

5
Bad Listening Habits
  • Pseudolistening-pretending like you are listening
  • Self-centered listening-using the time while the
speaker is speaking to rehearse our next response
  • Selective listening-only listening to the parts
of the message that we find interesting

6
Bad Listening Habits
  • Fill-in listening-filling in the gaps of the
message with what we expect to hear
  • Defensive listening-interpreting comments as
personal attacks when they were not intended that
    way
  • Insulated listening-not listening because the
    message makes us uncomfortable
  • Reconstructive listening-changing a message so
that it fits with a prior message

7
Are you a good listener?
  • Pick up the survey in the front of the room and
complete it without talking to your classmates.
  • We will discuss the questions after everyone is
    done!
