Title: Orienteering Compass
1Orienteering Compass
The orienteering compass consists of three basic
parts 1) Magnetic needle 2) Revolving compass
housing 3) Transparent base plate The magnetic
needle swings freely on a bearing. The north end
of the needle is typically painted red. The rim
of the compass housing is marked with the four
cardinal points North, South, East, and West
and is divided into degree lines.
The transparent bottom of the housing has an
arrow that points directly to the 360 degree N
mark. This arrow is the orienting arrow. In the
bottom of the compass housing are lines that run
parallel to the orienting arrow. These lines are
the orienting lines. The compass housing is
attached to a transparent base plate. A line
to show direction is engraved into the base
plate. This line runs to the front edge of the
base plate and forms an arrow. This arrow is
called the direction of travel arrow.
