Title: Formation of the Solar System

1
Formation of the Solar System
  • The Nebular Hypothesis

2
Solar Nebular Hypothesis
  • The Solar System formed from a cloud of hot gas
and dust known as the Solar Nebula

3
Rotation
  • The nebula's rotation caused it to collapse into
a disk around a central star

4
Condensation
  • As the nebula cooled, the matter in the disk
    condensed and the planets formed.

5
Outer Planet Formation
  • The outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and
Neptune) became large enough to attract the
    surrounding gas of the nebula

6
Inner Planet Formation
  • Nearer to the star, the inner planets formed as a
result of small particles colliding with one
    another

7
Consolidation
  • Once an object became large enough to have its
own significant gravitational pull, it attracted
the smaller objects nearby and ultimately the few
    large objects dominated.

8
Animation
  • This video shows an interpretation of the nebular
    hypothesis

9
Draw 2d Models
  • Fold your paper in half length-wise.
  • Fold your paper in thirds in the other direction.
  • Label the six boxes 1-6.
  • In each box draw models of each stage of the
solar systems development in order from oldest
    to most recent.
