Everything is in Flux
  • The internet is ever-changing
  • These tips will help minimize the loss of your
    personal information
  • You may be safe using program A and B today but
someone will invent a new technology that will
make program B a hole in your security

3
Privacy Policies Terms of Use
  • Many Agreements written so that they can be
    changed at any time
  • Some agreements have fine print that says by
agreeing to the policy, you will install malware
  • Its nearly impossible to guarantee that your
information will be destroyed as it ages

4
Contextual Changes
  • You lose control of any information you post to
    the web!!!
  • You have NO control over how it is used after it
    is put onto the internet
  • Changes in the context of how information is used
    is what harms you
  • Most sites like Facebook, MySpace, etc. offer
privacy protection but you have to activate it
    yourself (its NOT automatic)

5
Your Info Makes
  • Of course, it doesnt make you any money
  • Information Brokering, the selling of your
personal information, is a multi-billion dollar,
    largely unregulated industry

6
The CIA Likes Social Websites
  • The US Government is researching harvesting
    information from Social Networking websites
  • Its easy infopeople put it there voluntarily
  • Tiny bits of information can be gathered from all
over the internet and compiled to create a large
portfolio of information about an individual

7
Email Postcard
  • Sending an e-mail is a lot like sending a
postcard anyone with access to the e-mail can
    read it
  • You can encrypt your emails to prevent anyone
from reading themsomeone needs to know how to
    decrypt them though

8
Phishing
  • Attempts to get you to reveal your personal
    information for nefarious purposes
  • Dont respond to email or even open it, if you
dont think its from a legitimate source!

9
Spoofed
  • E-mail sent from a non-legitimate source that
appears as if it did come from a legitimate
    source
  • Its possible for me to send an email from
Stephdogg1701_at_hotmail.com that looks like it came
    from CustomerService_at_usbank.com
  • Legitimate business know about Phishing and
Spoofing and DO NOT conduct serious transactions
    via mass e-mailings!

10
Multiple E-Mail Addresses
  • Great idea!
  • Have 1 email address for junk mail
  • Sign up for forums
  • Filling out web forms
  • Etc.
  • Have another for personal mail

11
Google, Yahoo!, MSN, etc.
  • Major search engines retain records of every
search you do (and tie it to an IP address)
  • Individually search keywords show nothing, but
collected they may expose your identity and can
    be misinterpreted

12
AOL Messed Up
  • Accidentally posted 20 million personal search
    queries from over 650,000 users
  • The information was immediately absorbed by other
    web servers
  • AOL apologized and took down the info, but it was
too latethis information is stored somewhere in
    other server somewhere
  • Some people have been identified through their
anonymous searches and have been harmed

13
