What are Natural Resources?
Natural Resources are substances taken from the
earth that are useful to people like you and me.
Natural Resources are either living or
non-living. Living natural resources include
animals, plants, and the crops that make the food
we eat.

Non-Living
Non-living natural resources are those minerals
that we take from the earth. These help us make
things like cars, tall buildings, and bridges.
They can also be used to make heat energy that
keeps us warm in the winter and that helps us to
make machines run better and faster. These are
sometimes called mineral ores.

Non-Living
There are two other non-living natural resources
that all living things depend on live. One of
these is air. The air we breath is made by a
process call photosynthesis. Green plants like
trees, give us oxygen which we need to live. We
also give plants something they need to live.
That something is called carbon dioxide.

Water is another very important non-living
natural resource. Without water living things
would not exist. Living things came from water.
When life started on the Earth, the first living
things were tiny jelly-like blobs. These were
called amoebas. They absorbed the Suns
life-giving energy and soon started to reproduce.
That means they were able to make more amoebas
just like themselves.

Renewable Resources
Renewable resources are those resources that can
be replaced or renewed. This includes animals
because all animals can reproduce, plants that
grow year after year, and water which is replaced
by rain. Even though water and air are not a
living things, they are also considered a
renewable resources. Can you guess why?

Nonrenewable Resources
Nonrenewable resources are elements taken from
the earth such as gold, silver, and iron. These
are considered nonrenewable because they are not
replaced quickly enough to be useful to humans.
