Agenda SWIM General Conference call 1-10-07
  • News Batchelor (5 min)
  • IPS (30 min) Discussion on progress on near
    term tasks from last call
  • Physics tasks (20 min) everybody
  • Progress on framework (10) min Bramley
  • Slow MHD (25 min)
  • Schanck/Hegna/Kruger

2
News etc
  • We need a designated scribe for this call who
    will do it?
  • Our joint RF SciDAC/CEMM/SWIM Incite proposal for
time at NCCS was approved for 2007 at 2M
processor hours on Jaguar. We used a total of
    1.9 M hours in 2007.Fred Jaeger got a separate
project on specific AORSA calculations for
    500,000 hours.
  • I am asking for a short summary from everybody on
first quarter FY07 progress and FY07 money spent
    quarterly from now on
  • Propose next conference call Wednesday Jan. 24 at
    100
  • FYI US/Japan workshop on Integrated Modeling of
Fusion Plasmas, Jan 29-31, at ORNL
  • Doug McCune has posted a preliminary write up on
the plasma state on the cswim.org web site. You
should have a look at it.

3
Specific milestones for rest of FY07 (distilled
from Bloomington meeting)
  • IPS tasks
  • 2/07 Freeze Plasma State version 1 Interface
    all variables defined, hypertext web
    documentation of variables and functions
  • 3/07 Functioning IPS with physics layer driver
script RF solver (AORSA and TORIC), Fokker
Planck (CQL3D), Equilibrium and Transport, MHD
    (DCON), NUBEAM
  • 4/07 Same physics components running under CS
    framework, useable by non-experts
  • 5/07 Complete simulations static RF benchmarks
    AORSA/TORIC static ITER scenario calculations
(also time dependent?) AORSA CQL3D, energetic
minority tail formation in C-Mod rate of
increase of tail CQL3D Equilibrium and
Transport, runaway electron production in ITER
    startup
  • 6/07 Complete incorporation of thin banana radial
transport model into CQL3D and coupling of Monte
Carlo distributions into RF and kinetic stability
    codes
  • 9/07 NUBEAM added to framework AORSA NUBEAM,
study of parametric ? absorption in ITER startup
  • Research tasks
  • 2/07 Complete roadmap for Slow MHD campaign
  • 6/07 Complete CS roadmap for advanced IPS and
    Slow MHD
  • 9/07 Complete preliminary calculations for Slow
MHD using simple closure and and RF models

4
Near term tasks to accomplish these milestones
IPS
  • Physics
  • CQL3D running reliably on PPPL computers (Harvey)
  • Equilibrium and Transport component wrapper
written, coupled to Plasma State and launched by
    physics layer driver script, documentation
    (Ku/Jardin)
  • MHD component wrapper written, coupled to Plasma
State and launched by physics layer driver script
    (Kruger)
  • Regression tests run, documented and archived
    (all)
  • Port everything to Jaguar in anticipation of real
    physics runs (all)
  • Continue refinement of AORSA component and
    generate TORIC component (Berry/Jaeger/Bonoli/Wrig
    ht)
  • Coding camp (possibly remote) on use of Plasma
State (Berry, Feb 1 after US-Japan WS)
  • Computer Science (2 parallel efforts)
  • CS 1 physics layer script
  • Finalize working directory structure, naming
conventions, file moves or links to input files,
plasma state working files, and results directory
    (Bramley, Elwasif, Bernholdt)
  • Formalize the build system and its interaction
with svn repository so that mere physicists can
grasp how it works (Bramley, Elwasif, Bernholdt)
  • Figure out how to make this work on Jaguar
(assuming the physics codes run on Jaguar)
  • CS 2 framework
  • Merge physics layer driver existing components
    with framework and test
  • Produce complete framework physics using dummy
    physics codes
  • Port framework to Jaguar
