Skills Matrix 5 Steps To Your Success
  • Stockport College E2E Programme

2
Five Steps to Your Success Matrix.
Through research, key staff delivering the e2e
programme at Stockport College, determined that
there were five key areas as being the most
common barriers to learning for young people on
the E2E Programme. It was then agreed that each
of the five key areas should then broken down
into a further five sub headings.
This matrix has been developed and evaluated with
help from E2E learners. The matrix is
introduced to the learner at interview stage and
is primarily used as a self-assessment for the
individual to highlight areas where they would
need further development. It also gives a
foundation to build upon. Areas, which have been
highlighted will be discussed and monitored with
the individual and their key worker over a
four-week period for the duration of the
programme.
This matrix clearly illustrates distance
travelled or not. Each highlighted sub heading
contains 10 small boxes, which will be ticked as
to where the individual feels that they are at on
a scale of 1-10. A new matrix is used for each
review. There are 10 boxes in total.
The matrix is attached to the review and will be
referred to at the next review.

The matrix is a personal and social skills
assessment tool which is introduced at interview
stage to aid target setting. It supports the
initial assessment process and acts as a good
foundation to build upon.
  • Assists individuals to identify their own
understanding of their skill level as well as
    their personal and social level.
  • Allows the individual to start to think about
setting of objectives and SMART targets.
  • Clearly illustrates distance travelled or where
the individual is failing to make progress on a
    four weekly period.
  • Allows data to be collected to determine which
individuals have achieved their personal and
social units. (Information is entered monthly on
    the PICS Database).

By the individual highlighting areas for
development, it will act as a guide to confirm if
the e2e programme would be suitable or not for
the young person.
  • 1-3 Highlighted areas does suggest that the young
person would be ready for basic and key skills,
development of personal and social skills and
    vocational development.
  • 3-5 Areas highlighted suggests that the pre
employment route is open and would be likely to
    achieve with support.
  • 5 areas highlighted would require careful
consideration as e2e might not be appropriate to
address the learners needs. ( In this case the
Work Related programme may be an appropriate rote
    to follow)

Evolution of the Matrix
The matrix has been devised by using the
information collected at interview stage since
August 2003.
The data confirmed that the following areas
presented barriers to learning.
  • Time management skills
  • Confidence
  • Self awareness
  • Presentation
  • Motivation
  • Self control
  • Learning skills

The matrix was introduced in January 2005, and
the boxes appeared as smiley faces, the learners
were asked to evaluate the matrix and as a
result, the smiley faces were replaced by boxes.
The learners also said that they would find it
easier to rate where they were at by using a
scale of 1-10. Overall, they liked the tool, and
were delighted that they had developed it
themselves.
