    school group. Deviations require considerable
advance notice and extra staff time to process,
so we ask your cooperation in adhering to the
    following guidelinesThe only deviations School
Partners Abroad can accommodate are an adjustment
in the date or the departure or return flight
to/from the host country. The new flight must be
booked between the same international airports
and on the same international carrier being used
for the school group. School Partners Abroad will
not arrange for other international flights,
domestic flights in Japan, trains, hotels, etc.

    deviating participant(s).

    be issued without written notification.
  • Cancellations up until the Program Deposit

Insurance
  • INSURANCE
  • All School Partners Abroad participants (American
and visiting students and teachers) are covered
by health, accident and repatriation insurance
arranged for them by School Partners Abroad.
Under these policies, participants are insured
from the time of departure from their homes until
    their return.
  • The cost of the insurance coverage described
below is included in the established program
price. The policies provided conform to
requirements of the United States Information
Agency and should be adequate for any situation.
However, if parents or schools wish to obtain
additional coverage, it is suggested that they
    consider extending existing family or
    institutional policies.
  • Medical and Accident Insurance
  • Participants from the United States
  • Unlimited coverage of physician, hospital,
medication insurance for participants is provided
for treatment of accidental injuries and illness.
There is also coverage for medical evacuation,
    repatriation of remains, accidental death,
emergency dental care and theft/damage of
    personal property. Pamphlets detailing the
coverage and claims process are provided to each
school for distribution to students and families
(sent to the School Coordinator shortly before
    departure).

12
Money
  • We suggest that students take about 300 to 500
in spending money for personal expenses and meals
in Tokyo. Some students spend more, some spend
    less.
  • Cash
  • Credit card
  • Travelers checks

  • Japan is mainly a cash society.  Some credit
cards and Cirrus, Maestro, Link and Delta cash
cards are NOT widely accepted, and few banks or
cash machines will provide cash drawn on such
cards.  Japanese post offices do have cash
machines, which will accept Visa, Delta and
Cirrus cards during hours of business.
  • Citibank and Seven-Eleven ATMs will also take
foreign credit and debit cards.  Cash machines do
not operate 24 hours a day.  They generally close
at 2100 hours or earlier and may not operate at
the weekends.  You should check with your bank
before traveling and take sufficient alternative
sources of money for the duration of your stay.
Western Union Money Transfer is available in
    Japan.

15
  • Driving
  • Visiting students participating in School
Partners Abroad are prohibited from driving any
motor vehicle (including motorcycles and mopeds).
This policy is designed to comply with insurance
restrictions, and strict adherence is therefore
    essential.

16
  • Telephone
  • Visiting students are responsible for the cost of
all personal telephone calls they make. Students
and host families should work out a system on how
    to handle long distance calls.

17
SPA Policy
  • Standards of behavior
  • disciplinary repatriation
  • program policies on drinking, driving and drugs
  • behavior expectations during the cultural program

18
SPA/Japiu Policy
  • Drugs
  • The use, sale or possession of illegal drugs,
including marijuana, is strictly forbidden. Any
participant found to be using, selling or in
possession of illegal drugs will be sent home
immediately, at the expense of the students
family. Participants should also be aware that
they are subject to the laws of the country in
which they are visiting and may be prosecuted by
local authorities for the use, sale or possession
    of illegal drugs, including marijuana.

19
The Law
  • If you are arrested, even for minor offences such
as petty theft or possession of very small
quantities of illegal drugs, you may be held in
detention for weeks or months during the
investigation and legal proceedings. Under local
law, a suspect can be held for up to 23 days
without being formally charged with a crime and
bail is seldom granted to foreigners.
  • Penalties for drug offences are severe and may
include heavy fines, lengthy imprisonment and
deportation. Under Japanese law you can be
convicted of drug use based on positive blood or
    urine tests alone.
  • Penalties for serious crimes, such as murder,
    include the death penalty.
  • Do not become involved with drugs.  Japan has a
zero tolerance policy. Possession of small
amounts will lead to detention and prosecution.
Possession of large amounts leads to long prison
    sentences and heavy fines.
