Title: The Gospel of Matthew

1
The Gospel of Matthew
Knowing the Messiah
2
Review
  • Parable a short narrative under which some
important truth is veiled. Of this sort were the
    parables of Christ.
  • Matt 1310-17
  • Why do You speak to them in parables? Jesus
answered them, "To you it has been granted to
know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but
to them it has not been granted.
  • I speak to them in parables because while seeing
they do not see, and while hearing they do not
    hear, nor do they understand.
  • Matt 1334-35
  • This was to fulfill what was spoken through the
prophet "I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES I
WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF
    THE WORLD

3
Explaining Everything Privately
  • Mark 434
  • 34 and He did not speak to them without a
parable but He was explaining everything
    privately to His own disciples.

4
The Seeming Contradiction
  • We get the picture in these verses that Jesus in
intentionally revealing and concealing truth at
    the same time.
  • His purpose is to reveal it to some
  • And conceal it from others
  • Why would God want to conceal the truth from
anyone, especially when salvation is on the line?
  • What about God wanting everyone to be saved and
    not perish?
  • 2 Peter 39
  • The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some
count slowness, but is patient toward you, not
wishing for any to perish but for all to come to
    repentance.

5
The Culmination Of These Things
  • From these verses we understand
  • Jesus spoke in parables
  • Parables were meant to convey meaning to some
people and to hide meaning from others
  • The disciples are given the meaning secretly
  • The multitudes do not understand
  • They can not understand because they have
darkened hearts seeking to justify wickedness
  • Those who can not understand because they are not
of God, will be given over to an even greater
delusion so that they will receive judgment

6
Chosen
  • Some people are chosen for deliverance and others
    for destruction.
  • Matt 2624
  • Judas-The Son of Man is to go, just as it is
written of Him but woe to that man by whom the
Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good
for that man if he had not been born.
  • Why? Didnt he have a choice?
  • Didnt God know what choice He would make?

7
Hmmm?
  • John 664-65
  • But there are some of you who do not believe."
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were
who did not believe, and who it was that would
betray Him. 65 And He was saying, "For this
reason I have said to you, that no one can come
to Me unless it has been granted him from the
    Father."
  • If God knows what choice you will make and still
allows you to be born, did he not choose at that
point for you to make that choice?
  • Does this mean He took away your choice?

8
The Son of Perdition
  • John 1712 (Compare the NIV)
  • While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your
name which You have given Me and I guarded them
and not one of them perished but the son of
perdition, so that the Scripture would be
    fulfilled

9
Prepared for Destruction/Glory
  • Romans 911-21
  • 11 for though the twins (Jacob and Esau) were not
yet born and had not done anything good or bad,
so that God's purpose according to His choice
would stand , not because of works but because of
Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, "THE OLDER
WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER." 13 Just as it is
written, "JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."
14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice
with God, is there? May it never be! 15 For He
says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE
MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE
COMPASSION." 16 So then it does not depend on the
man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who
has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh,
"FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO
DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME
MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH."
18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and
He hardens whom He desires. 19 You will say to
me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who
resists His will?" 20 On the contrary, who are
you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing
molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you
make me like this," will it? 21 Or does not the
potter have a right over the clay, to make from
the same lump one vessel for honorable use and
    another for common use?

10
Why would God do this?
  • Romans 922
  • What if God, although willing to demonstrate His
wrath and to make His power known, endured with
much patience vessels of wrath prepared for
destruction? 23 And He did so to make known the
riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which
He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us,
whom He also called, not from among Jews only,
but also from among Gentiles. 25 As He says also
    in Hosea,

11
Predestined
  • Ro 829Our Victory in Christ For those whom He
foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed
to the image of His Son, so that He would be the
    firstborn among many brethren
  • Ro 830Our Victory in Christ and these whom He
predestined, He also called and these whom He
called, He also justified and these whom He
    justified, He also glorified.
  • Eph 15The Blessings of Redemption He
predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus
Christ to Himself, according to the kind
    intention of His will,
  • Eph 111The Blessings of Redemption also we have
obtained an inheritance, having been predestined
according to His purpose who works all things
after the counsel of His will,

12
Parable of the Marriage Feast
  • Matt 221-14
  • 1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,
2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a
king who gave a wedding feast for his son. 3 "And
he sent out his slaves to call those who had been
invited to the wedding feast, and they were
unwilling to come. 4 "Again he sent out other
slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited,
"Behold, I have prepared my dinner my oxen and
my fattened livestock are all butchered and
everything is ready come to the wedding feast."'
5 "But they paid no attention and went their way,
one to his own farm , another to his business,
6 and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated
them and killed them. 7 "But the king was
enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed
those murderers and set their city on fire.
8 "Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is
ready, but those who were invited were not
worthy. 9 'Go therefore to the main highways, and
as many as you find there, invite to the wedding
feast.' 10 "Those slaves went out into the
streets and gathered together all they found,
both evil and good and the wedding hall was
filled with dinner guests. 11 "But when the king
came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a
man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,
12 and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come
in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was
speechless. 13 "Then the king said to the
servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him
into the outer darkness in that place there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14 "For many
are called , but few are chosen."

13
The Contradiction Question
  • Does God want everyone to be saved or has He
already decided who would be saved?
  • We have been told that some people were destined
to destruction and that others were destined to
    Glory.
  • Does this mean all people fit specifically into
    these categories?

14
Wedding feast revealed
  • The King God
  • Kingdom Kingdom of Heaven
  • Son Jesus
  • Bride Church
  • Wedding feast Judgment and time following
  • Slaves Gods Messengers
  • Invited guests Israel (Chosen people)
  • Disobedient Israel Those who killed the
    messengers
  • 70 AD Destruction of Rome God the King sends
His army to destroy their city
  • Second sending of messengers Disciples of Jesus
    (New Testament)
  • Main Highways public crossroads of life where
all kinds of people are (represents the
availability of Gods invitation to all people
    through the Gospel)
  • The Hall is filled with both good and evil people
many come into the Church, but not all are good
    (Wheat and TaresGod will separate)
  • Wedding garments blood of Christ (pure white
    robes washed in Christs blood)
  • Man without garment Person who looks like the
others but has not been saved
  • Outer darkness judgment, outside the kingdom
    of God (Hell)

15
Many Are Called, Few Chosen
  • Matt 2214
  • For many are called , but few are chosen.
  • God called the Jews, most did not come and were
    not chosen
  • God Called the people in the byways
  • Many came, still few were chosen (Matthew 721)
Many will come saying did we not prophecy.I
    never knew you.
  • Picture of mustering of Roman Army.the call went
out. Soldiers assembled. Not all soldiers were
    chosen.

16
Conclusions
  • God has called all to repentance (many are
    called)
  • All had the opportunity to come
  • Some refused
  • Some came but not on Gods terms and tried to get
    in without the right clothing
  • But God chooses from all those who come.
  • In addition, What about the selected attendants
  • Best man.Slaves..Bridesmaids..etc(They were
specifically chosen to serve a specific purpose)
  • In history God has specifically raised up certain
individuals from humanity to accomplish certain
    things
  • Noah to preserve mankind
  • Pharaoh to accomplish Gods glory in the Exodus
  • Moses-to lead the Israelites
  • John the Baptist to be the Forerunner of Jesus
  • Judas to betray Jesus
  • Not all of us are chosen ahead of time for such
specific tasks, but the invitations were planned
ahead of time for us to be able to come

17
Predestination and Foreknowledge
  • If God knows all things, and He does, then He
knew who would be created (even the numbers of
the hairs on their heads) and He knew who would
    answer His call.
  • He also knew who would deny Him.
  • If you knew how people would respond, what would
    you do?
  • He takes that knowledge and implements his
    purpose using them.
  • Example..He knew Pharaoh would harden his heart.
So From the beginning, God planned to use that
hard heartedness for His purpose and Pharaoh was
responsible for sending out the Israelites with
    the spoils of the Egyptians

18
Final Thoughts
  • Ro 829Our Victory in Christ For those whom He
foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed
to the image of His Son, so that He would be the
    firstborn among many brethren
  • Notice the order.
  • Foreknew
  • Predestined
  • Since He knew what they would choose (They still
had a choice) He predestined the outcome of the
choice. (He did not predestine the choice)

Sower (Mt. 133-9)
  • sower went out to sow
  • some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds
    came and ate them up.
  • Others fell on the rocky places, where they did
not have much soil and immediately they sprang
up, because they had no depth of soil. "But when
the sun had risen, they were scorched and
because they had no root, they withered away.
  • Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came
    up and choked them out.
  • "And others fell on the good soil and yielded a
crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some
    thirty.

21
Meaning of the Sower Matt 1319-23
  • 1. Seed sown beside the road
  • When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and
does not understand it, the evil one comes and
snatches away what has been sown in his heart
  • 2. Seed sown on the rocky places
  • this is the man who hears the word and
immediately receives it with joy yet he has no
firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and
when affliction or persecution arises because of
the word , immediately he falls away.
  • 3. Seed sown among the thorns
  • this is the man who hears the word, and the
worry of the world and the deceitfulness of
wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
  • 4. Seed sown on the good soil
  • this is the man who hears the word and
understands it who indeed bears fruit and brings
forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some
    thirty."

22
4 kinds of soil
  • Roadside (packed down, solid)
  • Rocky Soil (No place for roots)
  • Thorns (Choked by everything)
  • Good Soil (Productive)
  • The sower sows everywhere, whether something will
    grow depends on the soil.
  • What kind are you?

23
Parable of the Weeds/Tares (1324-30)
  • man sowed good seed in his field
  • while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and
sowed tares among the wheat, and went away
  • when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the
    tares became evident also.
  • The slaves of the landowner came and said to him,
'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field?
How then does it have tares
  • he said to them, 'An enemy has done this!' The
slaves said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go
and gather them up?' But he said , 'No for
while you are gathering up the tares, you may
uproot the wheat with them. Allow both to grow
together until the harvest and in the time of
the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First
gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to
burn them up but gather the wheat into my barn."

24
Tares Explained (1336-43)
  • "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of
    Man,
  • the field is the world
  • the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom
  • the tares are the sons of the evil one
  • the enemy who sowed them is the devil
  • the harvest is the end of the age
  • the reapers are angels.
  • So just as the tares are gathered up and burned
with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.
The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and
they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling
blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and
will throw them into the furnace of fire in that
place there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth. "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS
THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father.

25
Mustard Seed (1331-32)
  • "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed,
which a man took and sowed in his field and this
is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is
full grown, it is larger than the garden plants
and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR
come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES.
  • Meaning Kingdom starts small but will be greater
than all when fully grown and will cover the
whole earth and we will find shelter in the
    kingdom

26
Yeast/leaven (1333)
  • "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a
woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until
    it was all leavened."
  • The yeast (power of the kingdom) is hidden by the
woman (the Church) in the three pecks of flour
(triune nature of people) until the kingdom is
    spread throughout the whole world.

27
Treasure and The Pearl (Matt 1333-46)
  • "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden
in the field, which a man found and hid again
and from joy over it he goes and sells all that
he has and buys that field.
  • "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl
of great value, he went and sold all that he had
    and bought it.
  • When one discovers the kingdom (treasure/pearl)
in the midst of the world (dirt/earth) he
protects that knowledge until he can receive it
(purchase the field) and it is worth all his
    possessions.

28
The Net (1347-50)
  •  "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet
cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every
kind and when it was filled, they drew it up on
the beach and they sat down and gathered the
good fish into containers, but the bad they threw
    away.
  • "So it will be at the end of the age the angels
will come forth and take out the wicked from
among the righteous, and will throw them into the
furnace of fire in that place there will be
    weeping and gnashing of teeth.

29
Lost Sheep (1812-15)
  • "What do you think? If any man has a hundred
sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he
not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go
and search for the one that is straying?  "If it
turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you,
he rejoices over it more than over the
ninety-nine which have not gone astray.  "So it
is not the will of your Father who is in heaven
that one of these little ones perish.
  • God protects His sheep, know when they stray,
goes to retrieve them, and rejoices over them
    when they are found.

30
The Unmerciful Servant (1823-25)
  • king who wished to settle accounts with his
    slaves
  • one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought
to him but since he did not have the means to
repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along
with his wife and children and all that he had,
    and repayment to be made.
  • the slave fell to the ground and prostrated
himself before him, saying, 'Have patience with
me and I will repay you everything
  • the lord of that slave felt compassion and
released him and forgave him the debt
  • But that slave went out and found one of his
fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii
and he seized him and began to choke him, saying,
    'Pay back what you owe.'
  • "So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began
to plead with him, saying, 'Have patience with me
and I will repay you.' "But he was unwilling and
went and threw him in prison until he should pay
    back what was owed.
  • So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened,
they were deeply grieved and came and reported to
their lord all that had happened.
  • Then summoning him, his lord said to him, 'You
wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because
    you pleaded with me
  •  'Should you not also have had mercy on your
fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on
    you?'
  • And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over
to the torturers until he should repay all that
    was owed him.
  • "My heavenly Father will also do the same to you,
if each of you does not forgive his brother from
    your heart."

31
Vineyard Workers (201-16)
  • a landowner who went out early in the morning to
    hire laborers for his vineyard.
  • When he had agreed with the laborers for a
denarius for the day, he sent them into his
vineyard and he went out about the third hour and
saw others standing idle in the market place and
to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard,
and whatever is right I will give you.' And so
    they went.
  • Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth
hour, and did the same thing.
  • "And about the eleventh hour he went out and
found others standing around and he said to
them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all
day long?' They said to him, 'Because no one
hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the
    vineyard too.'
  • When evening came, the owner of the vineyard
said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay
them their wages, beginning with the last group
    to the first.'
  • When those hired about the eleventh hour came,
each one received a denarius .
  • When those hired first came, they thought that
they would receive more but each of them also
    received a denarius.
  • When they received it, they grumbled at the
landowner, saying, 'These last men have worked
only one hour, and you have made them equal to us
who have borne the burden and the scorching heat
    of the day.'
  • "But he answered and said to one of them,
'Friend, I am doing you no wrong did you not
agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours
and go, but I wish to give to this last man the
same as to you. 'Is it not lawful for me to do
what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye
envious because I am generous ?' "So the last
shall be first, and the first last."
  • God is generous. Those who work for the vineyard
owner receive the same pay (Salvation) whether
    they come first or last.

32
Two Sons (2128-32)
  • A man had two sons
  • he came to the first and said, 'Son , go work
today in the vineyard.' "And he answered, 'I will
not' but afterward he regretted it and went.
  • The man came to the second and said the same
thing and he answered, 'I will, sir' but he did
    not go.
  • "Which of the two did the will of his father?"
    They said "The first.
  • Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the
tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the
kingdom of God before you. "For John came to you
in the way of righteousness and you did not
believe him but the tax collectors and
prostitutes did believe him and you, seeing
this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as
    to believe him.
  • It is the one who does the Fathers will that
    will be justified.

33
Parable of the Landowner (2133-43)
  • There was a landowner who PLANTED A VINEYARD AND
PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT,
AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine
-growers and went on a journey.
  •  When the harvest time approached, he sent his
slaves to the vine-growers to receive his
    produce.
  • The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one,
and killed another, and stoned a third.
  • Again he sent another group of slaves larger than
the first and they did the same thing to them.
  • But afterward he sent his son to them, saying,
    'They will respect my son.'
  • But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said
among themselves, 'This is the heir come, let us
kill him and seize his inheritance.' They took
him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed
    him.
  • Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes,
what will he do to those vine-growers?"
  • They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches
to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard
to other vine-growers who will pay him the
    proceeds at the proper seasons."
  • Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the
Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS
REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone
THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS
    MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES
  • "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will
be taken away from you and given to a people ,
producing the fruit of it. And he who falls on
this stone will be broken to pieces but on
whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

34
Fig Tree (2432-41)
  • Now learn the parable from the fig tree when its
branch has already become tender and puts forth
its leaves, you know that summer is near  so,
you too, when you see all these things, recognize
that He is near, right at the door .
  • "Truly I say to you, this generation will not
pass away until all these things take
place. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My
words will not pass away. "But of that day and
hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven,
nor the Son, but the Father alone.
  • "For the coming of the Son of Man will be just
like the days of Noah. "For as in those days
before the flood they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, until the day
that Noah entered the ark, and they did not
understand until the flood came and took them all
away so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
  • "Then there will be two men in the field one
will be taken and one will be left.
  • "Two women will be grinding at the mill one
will be taken and one will be left.

Talents (2514-30)
  • a man about to go on a journey called his own
slaves and entrusted his possessions to them.
  • To one he gave five talents , to another, two,
and to another, one, each according to his own
ability and he went on his journey.
  • Immediately the one who had received the five
talents went and traded with them, and gained
    five more talents.
  • In the same manner the one who had received the
    two talents gained two more.
  • But he who received the one talent went away, and
dug a hole in the ground and hid his master 's
    money.
  • Now after a long time the master of those slaves
came and settled accounts with them.
  • The one who had received the five talents came up
and brought five more talents, saying, 'Master,
you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have
gained five more talents. His master said to him,
'Well done, good and faithful slave. You were
faithful with a few things, I will put you in
charge of many things enter into the joy of your
    master .'
  • Also the one who had received the two talents
came up and said, 'Master, you entrusted two
talents to me. See, I have gained two more
talents. His master said to him, 'Well done, good
and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few
things, I will put you in charge of many things
enter into the joy of your master.
  • And the one also who had received the one talent
came up and said, 'Master, I knew you to be a
hard man, reaping where you did not sow and
gathering where you scattered no seed. And I was
afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the
ground. See, you have what is yours.' But his
master answered and said to him, 'You wicked,
lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not
sow and gather where I scattered no seed. Then
you ought to have put my money in the bank, and
on my arrival I would have received my money back
with interest. Therefore take away the talent
from him, and give it to the one who has the ten
talents.' "For to everyone who has, more shall
be given, and he will have an abundance but from
the one who does not have, even what he does have
shall be taken away. "Throw out the worthless
slave into the outer darkness in that place
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Ten Virgins (251-13)
  • "Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to
ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to
meet the bridegroom. 2 "Five of them were
foolish, and five were prudent. 3 "For when the
foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with
them, 4 but the prudent took oil in flasks along
with their lamps. 5 "Now while the bridegroom was
delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep.
6 "But at midnight there was a shout, 'Behold,
the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' 7 "Then
all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.
8 "The foolish said to the prudent, 'Give us some
of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' 9 "But
the prudent answered, 'No, there will not be
enough for us and you too go instead to the
dealers and buy some for yourselves.' 10 "And
while they were going away to make the purchase,
the bridegroom came, and those who were ready
went in with him to the wedding feast and the
door was shut. 11 "Later the other virgins also
came, saying, 'Lord, lord, open up for us.'
12 "But he answered, 'Truly I say to you, I do
not know you.' 13 "Be on the alert then, for you
do not know the day nor the hour. Matt 251-13
