8
Barriers to developing a Research Culture
  • Professionals time and attitude
  • NHS contract and workload make research
    increasing difficult
  • Social care lacks a tradition of research base
  • NISCHR needs to resource investigator faculty
time to be active in research
  • Treatment costs
  • RD moves resources between sectors cost centres
    need to enable flexibility
  • Excess treatment costs of innovative techniques
must be accessible in the evaluation phase
    saves money later

9
Developing a Research Culture
  • Making results relevant and accessible
  • to NHS social care managers and policy makers
  • To the whole service
  • To patients and the public
  • Ensure implementation
  • Through NICE guidance
  • Through appropriate training
  • Asking the next question...

10
Building basic science strengths
  • Highly competitive world
  • To be internationally competitive needs ongoing
    investment
  • Only world class groups or institutions will
    attract major inward investment
  • Therefore can only support a few international
    quality research areas
  • Universities developing capacity and working
    together

11
NHS support
  • In England Revolution
  • Culyer funds withdrawn.
  • Comprehensive research network established.
  • Multiple new funding streams for AHSCs, BMRCs,
    BMRUs, CLAHRCs, CLRN, FS etc
  • In Wales Evolution
  • improvements in reporting
  • high levels of activity noted across Trusts
  • joint working developed between WORD and NHS RD
    departments.
  • WORD Task and finish group for service support
    costs

12
Overcoming obstacles
  • NHS support
  • Pharmacy, Radiology, Physics, other support
    services
  • An example of support costs for one type of
clinical trial (band 7 radiographer / physics
    support)

13
Involving People
  • When asked, patients are keen to be involved in
clinical trials but most are not asked
  • Could we be more proactive?
  • You may be eligible to join a clinical trial. If
you are interested, please ask your doctor.
  • Involving People
  • Research studies involving patients, carers and
service users are likely to ask more patient
centred questions, to be more successful in
funding application and ethics review, and be
    more readily applicable

14
Facing the Challenges for Health and Social Care
Research in Wales
  • Significant challenges remain
  • NISCHR will provide
  • Increased funding
  • Access to UK wide funding streams
  • A new organisation to address issues
  • CRC Cymru has built the foundation
  • Continuing initiative and evolutionary change is
necessary to take the next steps forward
