For years, the Housing and Urban Development
Corporation has been a leader in experimental
approaches to housing. In this project, the
emphasis was on consumer-oriented rental
housing and urban regeneration. This
demonstration project aimed to support the
development of an INFILL INDUSTRY, and show-cased
a number of private corporation efforts to
develop integrated infill systems.

6A NEW INDUSTRY
Around the world, architects and contractors are
learning how to make residential buildings with
the needed accommodation capacity. Developers
are asking for open buildings prepared for market
variety both initially and over time. It is now
time for a new industry to grow up, to serve the
market for customized interiors. This is the
subject of the last section of my lecture. These
images were made by the pioneer of open building,
John Habraken. They are a good summary of the
principles of open building.

26These are just a few of the many examples of
residential open building that are being
constructed around the world. Many more are
built each year, most without celebration or
recognition. We would do well to study these
projects and developments in the industry that
support them. They are an indication of important
changes in the world we as architects -want to
help shape. Our question should be What
knowledge and skills do we need, to take part?
