- LEAD'S DAMAGE
- Lead poisoning can damage a young child's
developing brain, causing learning and behavioral
disabilities. - Lead poisoning is associated with poor school
performance, lowered employability and delinquent
behavior. - The Centers for Disease Control has established
10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood (10
µg/dl) as a level of concern.

- LEAD'S DAMAGE
- Children between the ages of six months and three
years are at the greatest risk. - a high degree of exposure to lead in household
dust because of normal hand-to-mouth activity. - developing nervous system is at heightened
vulnerability to lead toxicity.

Project Goals
- Enroll 75 families through the direct referral of
Moms First and Help Me Grow - Assess the 75 homes for lead hazards
- Perform low level interventions based on the
assessments - Record outcomes

Your Role Is Essential
- Identify appropriate mothers for recruitment
- Make the referral to the City HD or the County HD
- Educate mothers about lead poisoning and ways to
reduce exposure

Whats the Plan?
- One month after birth
- Home Visit
- If in high risk zip code
- Determine eligibility
- Privately owned home
- No plans to move in the next 2-3 months
- No EBL child in the home
- If eligible
- Fax Referral to CDPH or CCBH for home assessment

Whats the home assessment?
- Licensed Assessor
- Look for potential lead exposure avenues
- Dust
- Paint
- Soil
- Check for Disclosure Law
- Look for other environmental hazards
- Take samples
- If no potential lead exposure avenues, not
recruited

What happens if exposure avenues are found?
- If eligible for other programs, assessor will
refer (higher level of intervention) - If not eligible for other programs, recruited for
the ECI Project

Whats next?
- Limited repairs to control potential exposure
avenues - Average around 1,300 and up to 3,000
- The Health Department determines what repair work
is to be completed - Contractors complete the work in 1-2 days
- Occupants stay out of home during work, return in
evening (daily stipend given) - Health Department determines job is completed and
home is safe to return

And then what?
- Home Education Visit
- Health Educator from Environmental Health Watch
visits home within 30 days of the completion of
the minor renovation - Educate family on ways to reduce exposure to lead
- Demonstrates the use of a special vacuum cleaner
- Provide other lead safety materials

What happens after that?
- Follow up visits
- At 6 and 12 months after the first visit
- Ask about lead exposure control actions
- Reinforce lead exposure reduction ideas
- Take dust samples to measure for lead dust
- Obtain a blood sample from the child
