Special flame arrives at Everest base camp
A special Olympic flame arrived at Mount Everest
base camp today, as Beijing Games organisers
attempt to bring the symbol to the top of the
world's highest mountain, state press said.
The attempt to scale Everest with a high
altitude Olympic torch is expected to be a high
point in the global torch relay that has been
severely hampered by protests against China's
handling of Tibet. China's clampdown on Tibet,
and its overall human rights record, has been
the subject for the numerous protests that have
followed the torch relay around the world and
incensed the Beijing organisers of the Games.
On April 26, BOCOG revealed its planned torch
relay route for the Beijing Olympic Games. The
relay will be held from March 24 to August 8,
2008. It is composed of the overseas and
domestic routes and will last 130 days and
travel 137,000 kilometers through more than 130
cities across the five continents. During the
relay, mountaineers will carry the torch and
scale the highest peak in the world -- Mt.
Qomolangma. BOCOG unveiled on the same day the
Olympic Torch design, which possesses a unique
Chinese flavor.
