- In 1973, Gourgen Migirdic Yanikian, a 78-year old
Armenian, who was born in Erzurum, Turkey and
emigrated to the United States, visited the
Turkish Consul General Mehmet Baydar in Los
Angeles, California, told the Consul that he had
purchased a painting in Beirut, Lebanon, which he
later found out was stolen from an Ottoman
palace. He gave the Consul a picture of the
painting, and indicated that he would like to
return it to the Turkish Republic as a gift. - Baydar sent the picture of the painting to
Turkey, and requested an investigation. - The response from Turkey indicated that the
painting represented a theft, and should be
repossessed.

- Baydar contacted Yanikian right away, and
requested that he bring the painting over to the
Consulate. - Yanikian said that he was too old to carry the
painting, and suggested that the Consul should
come over and pick it up. - Thereupon, Baydar, together with his assistant
Bahadir Demir, went to Hotel Baltimore in Santa
Barbara, where the old Armenian was staying. - They went up to Yanikians room. As soon as they
sat down, Yanikian pulled his gun and killed the
two Turkish diplomats. - He then contacted the hotel manager, and asked
him to call the police. As the police was taking
Yanikian away, he uttered I just exterminated
two devils. - Yanikian was sentenced to life in prison.

- Many years later, in 1978, Dogan Uluc, a reporter
in America for the newspaper Hurriyet, managed to
get permission to interview the old Armenian in
prison - What do you expect from Turkey? The conflict
should be debated at a conference participated by
Armenians and Turks. Once the conference
concludes that they were wrong, the Turks should
disclose to the international public opinion that
their ancestors had murdered the Armenian
population, that they were sorry about the event,
and that they wanted to make up for the losses.
They should give us back the territories that has
belonged to the Armenians for as far back as
human history goes. They should compensate us for
our lost property.

- What territories do you mean? The Eastern and
Southeastern territories you confiscated by
murdering us. Many years ago, as the Armenian
problem was on the way to getting solved, the
initiative was abandoned. The Sevres Treaty was
signed during the last few days of the Ottoman
Empire United States President Wilson had
arranged for the insertion of certain conditions
in that Treaty, which called for the
establishment of an Armenian Republic in Eastern
Anatolia. The Western countries and the United
States had reached consensus on this issue but,
later on Mustafa Kemal gained prominence and
prevented its implementation. Now I want from the
current Turkish Government that it reevaluate the
Sevres Treaty, and assist the Armenians by
returning their territories to them, and in
establishing the Armenian republic.

- T. Turenc, who prepared the preceding summary of
the interview that took place with Yanikian in
1978, makes the following statementIn 1973,
Yanikian initiated the campaign by ASALA,
(Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of
Armenia), which over the years resulted in the
murder of 70 Foreign Service officers of the
Turkish Government, including many valuable
diplomats. I want the younger generation to
review this information, and evaluate the
recently initiated Apology Campaign in the
light of the factual information presented.
