Delta Kappa Gammas Involvement
  • In August of 1993 it was proposed that Delta
    Kappa Gamma hold Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO) status with the Department of Public
Information of the United Nations (UN/DPI).
  • At the International Convention in July 1994, the
motion that this amendment be added to the
    International Standing Rules was approved,
  • In the summer of 1995, Delta Kappa Gamma was
granted NGO status with the UN/DPI.
  • Anne-Marie Carlson of New York was appointed as
the first primary representative followed by
Doris Salagi from New Jersey, then Phyllis Hickey
from Connecticut and now Dr. Rita King from New
    York.
  • In 1995, Anne-Marie Carlson from New York became
the first member to become involved with the
newly formed Committee on Teaching About the
    United Nations (CTAUN).
  • In 1996, Delta Kappa Gamma undertook the first of
the Societys fund-raising drives in partnership
    with UNICEF.

Delta Kappa Gamma and CTAUN
  • The challenge of translating the UNs resources,
accomplishments, and potential into the curricula
of schools lies with our educators. The Committee
on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN) was
established in 1995 to provide support for
educators in meeting this challenge. Members of
CTAUN represent a number of NGO organizations who
have formed a partnership to address some of
    these common educational issues.
  • Since 1999, CTAUN has held annual
conference in the United Nationss Headquarters.
Each has been attended by several hundred
educators from all over the United States and
from number of other countries. Speakers have
included UN leaders, ambassadors, experts on
global problems, and notable personalities in
civil society. The experience of meeting at the
United Nations and discussing approaches to the
promotion of peace, equity, and education for all
    is exciting and worthwhile.
  • Currently we have 7 Delta Kappa Gamma members
actively involved with CTAUN. They are
Anne-Marie Carlson from New York who serves as
chair, Narin Stassis from New Jersey who serves
as 1st vice-chair, Margaret Nielsen from
Connecticut who serves as treasurer, Dr. Rita
King who serves as chair of the advisory board,
Phyllis Hickey from Connecticut who serves as a
    Director-at-Large. Margaret Anzul from New
Jersey and Dr. Jacqueline Abbott from Connecticut
also serve on the committee. For all kinds of
further information, please visit the CTAUN
    website at www.teachun.org.

Delta Kappa Gamma and ECOSOC
  • In July of 2003, Delta Kappa Gamma was granted
consultative status with the UN Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC). This allowed us to
expand our member involvement with the UN and has
opened the door to many opportunities, especially
in dealing with issues related to education,
women, and children around the world. Many of
Delta Kappa Gammas NGO representatives have
attended the weekly briefing on issues in our
    world today.

7
The Delta Kappa Gamma UN Network
  • At the 2002 International Convention, the
International Executive Board voted to establish
a UN Network. This meant that each state
organization would select a UN Liaison who would
be kept up to date on Delta Kappa Gammas
involvement at the United Nations and would
receive information that would be passed on to
members in her state. Currently we have been
produced 7 newsletters. All of our issues can
now be accessed through Delta Kappa Gammas
website. Margaret Anzul from New Jersey serves
as our newsletter editor and Margaret Nielsen
from Connecticut serves as our network
    facilitator.

Delta Kappa Gamma and UNICEF
  • In 1996, Delta Kappa Gamma formed a partnership
with UNICEF to support educational efforts in
some of the worlds most needy areas. Our first
endeavor was the Gambia Project. Through this
project we were able to assist the efforts to
help girls remain in school by providing funds
    for their education.
  • In November of 1999, we joined in the Pro-Maya
Project to assist children and their schools in
    Chiapas, Mexico.
  • In 2003, the Society joined the efforts to
support the teacher education program in
Afghanistan. Teachers were able to come together
at the provincial level for training in lesson
    design and teaching methods.
