Life Chances April 2006
- The White Paper Vision is to ensure that the UK
is equipped with - the skills we need for an economy that will
sustain our quality of life and our international
standing.
7The Catalyst Programme
- Catalyst comprises four major sub-programmes
which will support providers in taking a
structured approach to the development of leaders
and managers and in ensuring teachers, tutors and
trainers keep their vocational and subject
specialist skills up-to-date.
FE Sector (Colleges, Adult Community Learning
Work Based Learning)
8Equality and Diversity
- The FE workforce and its leadership are not
representative of the learner constituency either
nationally or regionally. - Our vision is therefore to increase the diversity
of the FE workforce, especially at senior levels.
- By being more representative, such an FE
workforce will be in a better position to address
the needs of the community it serves.

- FE Sector organisations attract, develop and
retain talented graduates as managers and future
leaders - Greater diversity of new recruits to management
and leadership positions in the FE Sector - Improved career pathways for the development of
management and leadership and to enable
succession planning across the FE Sector - FE Sector seen as offering career choices
attractive to talented individuals - 210 graduates in management and leadership
positions by March 2010
11Business Talent Outcomes
- A cultural shift in FE by the injection of
management and leadership skills from outside the
FE sector - For organisations, participation in Business
Talent will be determined through a process of
strategic business review - Individuals participating in the sub-programme
will be recruited direct to Principal/SMT or Tier
2/ Director level based on skills developed in
the private or public sector - Initial and on-going support will be provided to
the employing organisation and the new employee - 75 leaders across the FE sector will be in post
by March 2010

- Assisting Providers to Fill Hard - to - Fill
Vacancies - Strategic recruitment campaign to recruit
candidates with extensive industry / sector
experience to train to be a teacher / trainer /
tutor - Successful applicants undertake the qualification
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning
Sector (PTLLS) - PTLLS will be contextualised for the social care
and health and engineering sectors and six other
sectors which are currently being identified by
our research team - Recruit 75 candidates per vocational area across
the FE sector.
13Business Interchange Outcomes
- Enables teachers, tutors and trainers in the FE
sector to update their industry related skills
through a variety of learning experiences. - These range from one-day Industry Awareness
Visits through to one academic year Industry
Based Sabbaticals - Creates and builds on partnerships between the
Further Education sector and industry - The pilot programme will be available in all
industry sectors and fully funded - Contributes to individuals continuing
professional development.

FE provision and what Travel and Tourism

of the latest hotel computer systems Terri
McComiskeys OutcomesFirst hand experience of
the operations and management of a multi-national
Hotel.Key contacts with personnel within the
Hotel group for future Industrial visits and
student work placements. Knowledge of different
work areas with a large hotel giving me better
understanding of the job roles and skills
required within each department. Developed
