Brief review of how this task contributes to
modernization and utilization of a climate
database
  • Sea floor Lakebed sediments provide
    a valuable record of Climate
    Change
  • The length, continuity, and time-resolution of
data available from selected sediment cores
is a unique resource for global change
    research
  • Finely varved sediments from areas of rapid
    deposition provide a high-resolution record
    of past climates
  • Volcanic ash layers contribute to climate
    studies on relatively short timescales
  • Sediments from oceans lakes identify regional
controls on the magnitude of climate change,
and extend the record of climate change
    beyond ice core drilling data

2006 Contract Status as of November 3, 2006
Completed nonproprietary digitized materials
100 online On-target for shipment of remaining
2006 materials to contractor

2006 Accomplishments All Nonproprietary Approved
X-rays Online
Florida State core locations are shown in green.
Core 004-PC of cruise ELT 12 is highlighted in
pink. A portion of the scanned X-ray of ELT 12
core 004PC is displayed.

2006 Accomplishments All Approved Photographs
Available Online
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory core locations
are shown in orange. Cruise VM15 is highlighted
in pink. A portion of the scanned photograph of
VM15 core 107 is displayed.

2006 Accomplishments All Nonproprietary
Completed Core Logs Online
Oregon State University R/V Yaquina Cruise Y71-1
sample 2P is highlighted in pink. A portion of
the key-entered .PDF core log for Y71-1 sample 2P
is displayed. Boxes 7, 11, 12, 13 are waiting
for OSU to add supplementary information to the
logs before posting all other approved core
logs are online.

Proposed Work for 2007(year 3 of 3)
9
Proposed Work for 2007 Summary of Materials
  • Scanning
  • 18,720 8x11 grayscale printed pages
  • 1,000 grayscale X-ray films, sizes up to 5 x
    20
  • Key-entry
  • 6,300 pages of handwritten core descriptions

See original proposal for scanning/entry
specifications
During 2006, LDEO fell behind in preparation of
photographs. They will have sufficient funding
and staff to make up the shortfall in 2007.
Original estimates were 14,000 per year for three
years.

Proposed Work for 2007 Participating Institutions
  • Antarctic Research Facility, Florida State
    University (FSU)
  • College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences,
    Oregon State University (OSU)
  • Graduate School of Oceanography, University of
    Rhode Island (URI)
  • Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia
    University (LDEO)
  • National Lacustrine Core Repository, University
    of Minnesota (LacCore)

11
Time Funding Estimates for 2007
  • Estimated time needed to prepare data for CDMP
    contractors
  • Less than 1 week per shipment has been needed to
prepare data for the CDMP contractor.
  • Funding requested for NOAA salaries in support of
    this task
  • 10 of estimated cost for 2007 activities
  • Approximately 18 of 1 FTE for data inventory,
interactions with CDMP contractor, creation of
    FGDC-compliant metadata, updating databases for
online access, and preparation and staging of
    digitized data for permanent archive.
  • Part of a 2nd FTE for label generation and
    shipping.
  • Part of a 3rd FTE for technical consultation on
    images.
