Styles of Henry Moore

• Henry Moore sculpted primarily abstract, organic
  designs.
• A popular theme of his was the reclining figure,
  which he often sculpted on both small and large
  scale commissions.
• He sculpted dozens of human figures, in both
  single and group or family layouts.

  London Underground Headquarters.

• 1898 Born in Castleford, Yorkshire
• 1915 Becomes a student teacher at the
  request of his father despite his ambition
  to be a sculptor
• 1917 Enlists in the Army and is sent to
  France
• 1919 Returns to his old teaching post
• 1922 Begins to do outdoor sculptures
• 1922 Makes his first direct wood and
  stone carvings
• 1924 Carves his first reclining figure

• 1929 Marries Irina Radetzky in July and
  moves into an art studio in Hampstead
• 1929 Sculpts his first reclining figure
• 1930 Elected to the 7 and 5 society
• 1932 Appointed Head of the new sculpture
  department at Chelsea School of Art
• 1934 Creates his first monolithic,
  rectilinear abstract forms, which are his
  first multiple- peace compositions
• 1938 Begins to cast small lead sculptures

  sculpture, a helmet in lead
• 1940 Studio damaged by bombing
• 1940 Appointed official War Artist
• 1946 His daughter Mary is born
• 1954 Begins to use pebbles and stones to
  compose sketch- models
• 1958 Makes his first abstract forms in a
  setting
• 1962 Begins work on the Locking Piece
• 1967 Donates 30 major works to the Tate
  Gallery
• 1986 Dies on August 31, 1986

Henry Moores Education

• Won a scholarship in sculpture to the Royal
  College of Art in 1921.
• Studied at Leeds School of Art for two years.
• Won a scholarship from his elementary school to
  Castleford Grammar School.
• Awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of
  Art.

Awards Won By Moore

• Was awarded the Order of Merit in 1963.
• Won the International Sculpture Prize at the 24th
  Venice Biennale in 1948.
• He also won countless minor international awards
  throughout his lifetime.

The Henry Moore Foundation

• Henry Moore started the foundation to promote
  the spread and education of the arts around the
  world.

Upon his death, the majority of Moores fortune
went to his foundation.
