Title: WHAT IT IS

1
Jane Schaffer Writing
  • WHAT IT IS
  • WHAT IT IS NOT
  • WHY WE DO IT
  • HOW TO DO IT

2
WHO AND WHAT IT IS
  • Jane Schaffer is an English teacher from San
    Diego, California.
  • She developed this method to make it EASIER for
students to write a multi-paragraph essay.
  • The Jane Schaffer Writing System is a program the
    Riverview School District uses.
  • This method gives all students and teachers in
these schools a common language when discussing
    essays.

3
WHAT IT IS NOT
  • It is not the only way to create a response to a
    literary analysis prompt for writing.
  • Learning this method will not take the place of
    other ways of writing
  • This method will not replace the mode used for
    creative writing in your brain.

4
WHY WE DO IT
  • We learn the Jane Schaffer Method in 6th grade so
that we will understand the vocabulary for
writing at Tolt and Cedarcrest - and most high
    school English departments
  • This prepares you for 7th and 8th grade and
    beyond
  • All Language Arts teachers at Tolt will use these
terms and expect you to know how to create
    chunk paragraphs
  • You will be using this in other subjects as well
    (Science, Social Studies, Math, etc)

5
HOW TO DO JANE SCHAFFER
  • This writing method at 6th grade uses four colors
of PEN to create paragraph. This is why you are
required to have a 4 in 1color pen.
  • Do you need to have a 4 in 1 pen? No. Four
separate pens work just the same. They also last
    much longer.
  • What colors are needed? BLUE, RED, GREEN, BLACK.

6
HOW TO DO JANE SCHAFFER
  • CONCRETE DETAIL (CD) Red ink is used to write a
detail/fact from the text that responds to the
    prompt.
  • Think of the example of this being the meat in
the sandwich. Its the main ingredient.

7
HOW TO DO JANE SCHAFFER
  • COMMENTARY (CM) Green ink is used to write
your commentary (ideas) about the concrete detail
and how it applies to the prompt.
  • Using the example of the sandwich, this is the
extras that you put on the sandwich to make it
    more special and unique.

8
MORE
  • BLUE is for your TOPIC SENTENCE (TS) and for your
    CONCLUDING SENTENCE (CS)
  • They are the beginning and ending sentence of
the paragraph that you are writing. The TS and CS
will relate to each other, but they should not be
    just alike/identical.
  • If I am picturing a sandwich, these are the
slices of bread that hold it all together. The
sandwich would not be complete or exist without
    them.

9
MORE
  • BLACK IS FOR YOUR FINAL DRAFT Black ink is used
to write your completed paragraph AFTER you have
created and perfected it using the other colors.
All the information is blended into one flowing
    paragraph.
