• Over half of the user are in the United States
• 1993 US had 90,000 users
• 1999 US had 118,000,000 users

• The Internet has penetrated to about 40 of the
  adult US population
• Austin is one of five cities that has reached
• 50 usage

Children and the Internet

• 32 of Children 2-12 use the Internet
• Expected to grow to 63 by 2005
• Teens use the Internet an average of 10.3 hours
• - 8.5 chatting and e-mails
• - 1.8 for school work

• There is no one company or law enforcement agency
  that can monitor the Internet
• The Internet has allowed easier access to
  children
• Pedophiles have a support group

• Vice unit handled this case prior to 1998
• 1998 APD had a re-organization
• Exploitation cases including the Internet were
  split up with three units
• Major Crimes Task Force
• Hi-Tech
• Child Abuse
