An Outline of the Secondary School Places
Allocation System (SSPA)

Secondary One Admission For September 2003
Intend to study in a public-sector secondary
school
  • Apply to a preferred school directly
  • No restriction on school net
  • Apply ONE school only
  • Closing Date
  • 21 February 2003
  • Admission criteria and deadline for
    application are set by individual school
  • Notices will be issued for parents reference

Participate in SSPA System
Not apply for a Discretionary Place
Apply for a Discretionary Place
  • Make choices with reference to the Secondary
    School List
  • Submit the form to ED in early May
  • Complete and submit the form irrespective of
    whether a Discretionary Place has been applied
    for

Fill in Choice of School Form
  • Will be allocated according to banding, parental
    choice and random number
  • Will not be centrally allocated to a place if
    secure a discretionary place

Banding
1. Banding is based on the internal assessments
At the end of P.5 (June. 2002)
Mid year of P.6 (Dec. 2002 ) At the
end of P.6 (Apr. 2003)
2. Subjects for assessment
  • All subjects including A/C and Music will be
    assessed
  • Written paper will be set for Music
  • Scores for Hindi / Urdu / Active Chinese / IT
    and PE will not be counted
  • For General Studies,marks of project work will
    be counted

Parental choice
1. A Secondary School List, Choice of schools
Forms and other reference materials for Group
3 Students (English-medium schools) will be
distributed to parents in April.
2. Check whether all the information and
signature have been completed.
3. Enter as many different school choices as
you can.
4. Choose the schools that best suit your
child.

Random number
1.The random number is generated by the computer
before running the allocation programme.
2. It is used to determine the order of
allocation within the same Allocation Band.
3. The random number has no connection with the
Student Reference Number or the students
personal data.
4. The smallest number will come first in
allocating the choice .
5. The ED will not inform the school or parents
about the random number .
