Title: POPULATION

1
POPULATION
  • DISTRIBUTION
  • DENSITY
  • Need to be able to
  • 1.Define the terms.
  • 2.Describe distribution/density _at_ differing
    scales.
  • 3.Explain distribution/density _at_ differing
    scales,referring to
  • PHYSICAL/HUMAN factors affecting them.
  • 4.Draw and interpret LORENZ CURVES.
  • 5.Identify ways of maping distribution/density
    (Dot and Choropleth Maps)
  • 6.Reinforce understanding via CASE STUDIES _at_
    different scales.

2
DISTRIBUTION
  • Where people live.
  • SPATIAL arrangement of people across the earth.
  • Describes the way people are LOCATED within an
area. When plotted ion a map this can reveal areas
    of high/low populations
  • (which maps of population DENSITY do not
    show)
  • Can be shown by means of DOT MAP.

3
Density
  • The number of people per unit area (eg,per sq
    km)
  • Found by dividing the total population of a
    country
  • (or any region) by the total area of that
    country
  • (or region)
  • IT CAN BE MISLEADING
  • Because it averages out density across an
    area-it does
  • not show very accurately the variations in
    density within
  • an area.Often CHOROPLETH MAPS used to show it.

4
LORENZ CURVE (SKILL)
  • A graph indicating the degree of uneveness
    (distribution) of population.
  • Both axis show cumulative .
  • A diagonal line added to show perfectly even
population distribution can then be used to help
show the degree,or otherwise,of uneven population
    distribution.
  • It can also be used to show the uneven
    distribution,or otherwise,of inequality in a
    society.

FACTORS AFECTING POPULATION DISTRIBUTION AND
DENSITY
  • Beware of oversimplification.A combination of
    factors are responsible.
  • They may be
  • CULTURAL
  • PHYSICAL
  • HUMAN

7
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Initially settlements occupied a supportive
    environment
  • water supply
  • fertile soil
  • woodland-fuel (raw material)
  • above floodplain level of flooding
  • suitable growing season (climate/crops/raw
    material)
  • egHEARTHS of settlement in Mesopotamia

  • N India

  • NW Europe
  • BUT ALL LINKED TO PEOPLES ABILITIES TO
    SURVIVE
  • egtools used (plough/use of iron)
  • building materials
  • raw materials

8
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL
  • Access to the SEA.
  • Low ALTITUDE locations.
  • WATER availability.
  • Appropriate CLIMATE / VEGETATION.
  • Appropriate SOILS.
  • Access to RAW MATERIALS.
  • EACH OF ABOVE LINKED TO
  • PEOPLES ABILITIES TO EXPLOIT
  • AND DEVELOP THE ENVIRONMENT.
  • ( linked to their Human/Cultural abilities)

9
HUMAN /CULTURAL
  • Technological changes.
  • Social changes.
  • Economic developments
  • Political factors.
  • ALL LINKED TO ENVIRONMENTAL/
  • PHYSICAL FACTORS APPLYING
  • AT THE TIME.

12
EXAM QUESTIONSessay-style
  • 1.Identify and explain the features which lead to
large areas of the world having a very low
    density of population.(10)
  • 2.Explain the relative importance of
physical and human factors in determining
variations in population density within one
    country or region(10).
  • 2002

13
EXAM QUESTIONSstructured questions
  • Describe patterns
  • Suggest reasons for distribution of
  • (2002)
  • Complete the population distribution map.
  • Describe the distribution (of wards) you can see.
  • (2003)
