Funding Issues Advisory Committee - (required by
Perkins Vocational Funding) establishing a
committee of various stakeholders that meets your
needs in FCS, and will be supportive of your
endeavors. To establish a powerful committee be
sure to include community members, business
leaders, a supportive parent, and a school board
member. Collaboration - education working with
business and other groups for a common goal
(collaboration a combination of
strengths). Community of Learners - groups and
individuals coming together for a common learning
experience (example Rowan partnering with school
districts, community colleges, others for the
common purpose of teacher preparation......
preservice and inservice). Partnerships - two or
more groups working together on a project to
demonstrate a link (thinking outside of the box),
sometimes required on a grant project. All
parties have something to gain by
participation. P-12, or P-16 Learning
Communities - extended the public school system
to include community colleges 7 universities as a
means of education.

Professional Development Issues Networking -
nothing new, however, it is being recognized as a
valuable activity since research shows that
teachers learn from other teachers (surprise,
surprise!). PIP - include professional
activities in your PIP and don't forget that it
is a "living" document, making changes as
needed. Professional Development Activities -
joining your professional association, attending
meaningful workshops trainings related to your
field. Don't forget to include these in your
PIP! Professional Study Groups - colleagues
getting together for the purpose of sharing
information, ideas, successes (recognized as
an effective model in education).

Technology In the Classroom Digital Divide - the
gap between having technology and actually using
it (lots of funding available for crossing
this). Electronic Portfolio - a portfolio of
your work saved on a disk, CD-ROM, or on your web
site. Distance Learning - learning across
communities, connecting from one classroom to
another (not how far you go). Infusing
Technology - practicing the use of technology
with your students in your classroom (not just a
classroom management tool). Multimedia - using a
variety of electronics in your delivery of
instruction (not just filmstrips any more!).
5Jos Education Buzzwords
Scale-Up - improving the quality of your already
great lessons (making it better with
technology). Teaching Artifacts - a means of
demonstrating your teaching skills, a sample of
your teaching a well developed lesson plan,
samples of student work, a video clip of you
teaching, newspaper articles of your projects,
etc. (dig up a good example then share it with
someone!). Technology Rich Instruction -
teachers modeling the use of technology
students practicing the use of technology (do you
have one technology rich lesson?). Wireless
Connectivity - (a contradiction in terms?) you
must have hardwiring in the classroom to use
wireless computers, hand held devices, etc.

Incorporating Standards Into Your
Curriculum Action Research - using activities to
determine the effectiveness of your curriculum,
making changes as needed (foods lab
effectiveness of the lesson.) Authentic
Assessment - students create a product as a
means of evaluating their learning (a tried
true FCS practice!). Benchmarks - a way of
determining if you have accomplished what you set
out to do (stops along the way to meet your
goal). Constructivist Approach -
teachers/students connecting with their personal
collaborative learning through real life
experiences (we do this everyday in our FCS
teaching).

Hospitality Careers - a means of aligning your
program into more vocational terms and linking
to a career cluster (will this help you define
our program?). Reflective Statements - a means
of having students articulate their learning
(higher order thinking skills). Rubrics - a
reliable way of assessing a student's abilities
(takes more time to establish more effective
evaluation). Student Centered Approach -
allowing the student to learn by doing (so what
else is new?). Systemic Reform - a new better
way of practicing the basics of education
(creating a new paradigm in the way we do
things).
8Where is education going? How is FCS going to get
there?
- Standards Based Curricula which includes
alignment with Core Curriculum Content Standards,
as well as national standards. - Technology infused into the curriculum including
the use of high tech equipment actively used by
the students in the classroom. - Professional Development as a means of
professional self-improvement for educators. - Accountability of teachers (and school
districts) to teach content according to
standards, which leads to.........

there?
- Assessment of student learning, which will
include a variety of assessment instruments. - A greater dependence on external funding to
support program development. - Professional Study Groups as a means of
