Mathew, Mark, Luke, Java, and XML-2
  • Give Me That Old Time Religion

2
Give Me That Old Time Religion(On the Internet)
The report projects that within this decade as
many as 50 million individuals may rely solely
upon the Internet to provide all of their
faith-based experiences By the end of the decade
we will have in excess of ten percent of our
population who rely upon the Internet for their
entire spiritual experience
3
Church Next Quantum Changes in How We Do Ministry
  • There are numerous resources available

4
The Internet Church
  • New rules for ministry

5
Church Nextby Aubrey and Michael Malphurs
  • This book will help churches and Christian
organizations explore how they can further expand
their outreach and fulfill the Great Commission
by using the technology of the Internet.

6
Information Technology
  • Tactical tool
  • Strategic advantage

www.mychurch.org
7
Profits or SoulsWhich is More Important
  • Commercial organizations have moved past the
simple tactical use of technology. They now use
    technology to achieve strategic advantage
  • Unfortunately, many Adventist organizations and
leaders seem satisfied with the mere tactical use
    of technology

8
Attitudes Towards TechnologyCitibank
  • We are an IT firm masquerading as a bank

9
Attitudes Towards TechnologyUS Army
  • The realities of the information age promise to
alter forever the way the military does business.

General Gordon R. Sullivan, Former Chief of
Staff, U.S. Army
10
Attitudes Towards TechnologyUS Army
  • America's Army is in the midst of a remarkable
change driven by information age technologies
that will forever alter the way we fight

Captain Harry E. Jones, II
11
Attitudes Towards TechnologyChinese Military
  • In the 1991 Gulf War, the US used the advanced
    technology weapon systems with information
technology as a core. After that, the high
technology weapon systems have been used more and
more in battlefields. In Kosovo war and recent
Iraq war, high technology weapon systems became
the dominant weapons in military operations.
information technology as a core is the
technology basis of the military revolution, and
a basis for a new strong military state.

12
Attitudes Toward TechnologyMichelin
  • Michelin develops and uses sophisticated
numerical simulation tools for designing tires.
Research into new computational techniques for
Finite Element Analysis of tires is considered of
    strategic value to Michelin

13
Attitudes Towards TechnologyUnited Methodists
In my humble opinion, churches really only have
two choices get involved in the flow, or be left
behind on the shore. In ten years, a church that
does not embrace technology may find it's very
existence in jeopardy.   Larry Copling, United
Methodists Church

  • Technology is driving our country, so why not use
technology to the fullest in order to advance the
    kingdom?

16
Attitudes Towards TechnologySouthern Adventist
University
  • The Computer Science degree has less of a direct
application to our mission and if it doesnt
prosper well on its own, it should be
    terminated.
  • Gordon Bietz, University President

Attitudes Towards TechnologyAdventist Church
  • Panel discussion - Computing and Missions 2002

  • survey of nearly 600 senior executives in 18

    achieving competitive superiority through their

25
Strategic Advantage US Military
  • Advances in computer architecture and machine
intelligence will have reached the point where
intelligent agents can analyze the environment
and current battle situation, , select and
dispense munitions, and report results. These
unmanned systems will augment manned platforms in
every facet of operations on the ground, sea,
air, and space, including information dominance
    and manipulation.

26
Strategic Advantage Swainson's hawks
  • The most publicized practical application of this
technology is its use in solving the mystery of
the crash of North American Swainson's hawk
    populations
  • Through the use of satellite-based telemetry, the
area in central Argentina used by the hawks was
delineated and, within 18 months, the problem was
    remedied

27
Strategic Advantage Heal the Sick before they
get sick
  • locations of cattle pastures and human dwellings,
are inputted into the GIS map based on ultra-high
    resolution satellite images from commercial
satellites like Ikonos and QuickBird, which can
spot objects on the ground as small as 80 cm
    across. Then region-wide variables like
temperature, rainfall, vegetation types, and soil
    moisture are derived from medium-resolution
satellite data, such as from Landsat 7 or the
MODIS sensor on NASA's Terra satellite. (MODIS
    stands for MODerate-resolution Imaging
Spectrometer.) Scientists feed all of this
information into a computer simulation that runs
on top of a digital map of the landscape.
Sophisticated mathematical algorithms chew on all
these factors and spit out an estimate of
    outbreak risk.

Allan Martin Dre am Vision
.
  • As we get together (think tanks like this
conference)its a shame if all we talk about is
how to put the bells and whistles on MACRO
VISIONING is what we need. We need to not
simply catch the tail of technology and then pat
ourselves on the back. We have kids who are
leaving school and applying their abilities to
secular entities. We are losing out if we dont
put that to work for Christ

then distributed to Intelligent Agent PCs _at_ TX
    sites for transmission on time.

    world.

  • Bible Studies
  • Student in China
  • Bible instructor in California
  • Coordinator in Tennessee

31
Reality
  • Even though there are some examples of the
strategic use of technology with Adventism
  • The church as a whole does not view technology as
    a mission critical strategic asset.

32
Strategic Advantage Take another look.
  • The problems in the examples in this talk could
not have been solved without IT sitting in the
highest level meetings of their org. Unless the
church does this will miss opportunities
  • Instead we close technology programs at out
universities and too often relegate IT to
    tactical support

33
CIO A cabinet level position?
  • Bristol-Myers Squibb
  • Peugeot
  • World Rally Championship
  • US Military
  • Swainson's hawks
  • Department of health in India

These problems could not have been solved without
the CIOs involvement at senior strategic levels
in their organizations.
34
Give me that old time religion
  • Heal the sick
  • With the latest technology
  • Help the poor
  • Water, food, and the internet
  • Preach the gospel
  • What better way to go to all the world than
    through the internet
  • Support the brethren
  • With virtual communities

35
Think about the Mission of the Adventist Church
  • On-line Education
  • Connected Clinics

36
Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic
Faith
  • Many within our denomination have demonstrated
great proficiency in the use of computers,
    networks, and other enabling information
technologies. We intend to harness that knowledge
    and skill

What about Seventh-Day Adventists? Will we be
left behind?
37
  • Hopefully conferences such as this one can
  • inspire technologists to serve and
  • educate administrators on the strategic value of
technology in accomplishing the mission of the
    church
