Day 1
  • Soak egg in vinegar overnight
  • Egg shells are made of calcium.
  • Vinegar is acidic.
  • Make a prediction as to what will occur.

4
Day 2
  • Where are the shell contents now?
  • The thin covering over the egg is a model for
    which cell part?
  • What happened to the eggs mass after being in
the vinegar for 24 hours? Why?
  • In which direction did the water move? Why?
  • What are some properties (observations) of the
    corn syrup?
  • Place the egg in syrup overnight.
  • Make a prediction as to what will occur.

5
Day 3
  • What happened to the eggs mass after being in
corn syrup for 24 hours? Why?
  • What happened to the corn syrup? Why?
  • In which direction did the water move?
  • Compare the concentration of water in the corn
syrup to the concentration of water in the egg
before the egg was put in corn syrup.
  • How do you think the concentration inside and
    outside the egg compares now?
  • Place the egg in water overnight.
  • Make a prediction as to what will occur.

6
Day 4
  • What happened to the eggs mass after being in
    water for 24 hours? Why?
  • Explain the movement of water.
  • Why does the egg have a greater mass now than it
    did before the experiment?
  • Summarize in your own words and draw pictures to
    describe what happened and why.

Grading Rubric for Egg Osmosis Lab Write Up
  • Students will write up this lab as a double daily
grade. Each student is to write up this lab on
their own. It will not be worded the same as
another students lab write up. If students
papers are worded in a similar manner each will
receive a zero for a grade.

What to Include
  • Problem (3 points)
  • Materials List all materials used in this lab
    (5 points)
  • Procedure Done step-by-step and numbered. Not
in paragraph form. ( 10 points)
  • Data Table Neatly done, titled, with proper
labeling in the rows and/or columns ( 10 points)
  • Hypothesis for what should happen the following
day, in an Ifthenformat (3 points for each
    day 9 points)
  • Explain the reasoning for your hypothesis each
day using what you know about osmosis and
diffusion. Use the terms, osmosis, diffusion,
    transport, higher concentration, lower
    concentration, and selectively permeable membrane
in each days discussion (10 points for each day
    30 points)
  • Draw conclusions for each day using numbers form
your data to support your hypothesis (10 points
    for each day 30 points)
  • List any sources of error (3 points)
