What is

• Ketosis
• Is a form of acidosis resulting from excessive
  ketones in the blood
• (High Levels of acid in the bloodstream)

What are ketones?

• Fatty acid metabolites
• Strong organic acids
• High acidic substances

Ketones are normally present in the bloodstream,
but when their concentration exceeds 70 mg/dl
they start to appear in the urine most commonly
known as KETOSIS

Diagnosis

• Ketosis can be seen simply through a urine test,
  but can also be confirmed with a blood test,
  which will also measure blood acidity.

Symptoms

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal Pain
• Confusion

• Comatose (coma) or death

Metabolism

• Ketosis is a stage in metabolism occurring when
  the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen.
  Stored body fat or incoming dietary fat then
  breaks down into ketones.

Ketosis metabolic advantage to weight loss

• Ketones have about 5 calories per gram, The body
  excretes a number of ketones which is an
  advantage to the metabolism.
• Ketones get excreted in order to preserve the
  bodys acid-base balance.

Outcome during Ketosis

• The person during Ketosis can either loss weight
  which is an advantage to the metabolism or in
  sever untreated cases, the person can become
  comatose or even die as the acid pH depresses the
  nervous system. The excess acidity in the blood
  is dangerous to the whole body.

Treatment

• During an early stage of diabetes, insulin would
  be a good treatment to replace lost water with
  intravenous fluid, and monitor mineral levels. If
  the blood is at the stage of high acidity,
  bicarbonate solution intravenously is a good
  treatment.

• Starvation
• Low carbohydrates
• Fasting
• Diabetes mellitus

Summary Ketosis

• Is found in the bloodstream, as other
  abnormalities in the bloodstream. Ketosis has its
  advantages and disadvantages. Either losing
  weight or have excessive acid in the bloodstream
  that can do harm to the body or even be fatal.
