  • David Harbourne
  • Director

2
  • Aims
  • Help more young people achieve good results at 16
    upwards
  • Encourage more young people to stay in education
    or training, for longer
  • Reduce the number of young people not in
    employment, education or training
  • Encourage more employers to get involved in
education, more often and more effectively

3
  • In other words
  • Attainment
  • Progression
  • NEETs
  • Employer engagement

4
  • Its not
  • Something imposed from above we saw that the
London Challenge had made a difference and felt
we could do something worthwhile here
  • A really big initiative we havent the funds for
that, and in any case we believe we should focus
on sharing good ideas, not inventing new ones

5
  • Attainment
  • Results are getting better this years figures
    will be the best yet
  • Nevertheless, we lag behind most other English
    regions, and ...
  • ... a lot of schools do not achieve the benchmark
of 5 A to C GCSEs (including English and maths)

6
  • Its not just about schools below the 30
    National Challenge threshold
  • There is room for improvement across the whole
    spectrum
  • We have therefore grouped schools using two main
    criteria prior attainment, and relative
    deprivation

8
  • Sharing ideas
  • We will bring together two families of schools at
this point, to learn from the London Challenge
and to see whether and how they would like to
    work together
  • We will try not to tread on the toes of the
    National Challenge, or overload hard-pressed
    schools

9
  • Progression
  • Our key weapon is information.
  • Information and experience.
  • Our two key weapons are information and
    experience.
  • And impartial advice.
  • Amongst our key weapons Ill come in again.

10
  • Progression
  • Do parents, teachers, young people even careers
advisers have a full picture of the modern
    economy?
  • Lots of people believe that the engineering
industry was killed off in the 1980s and that
includes people who worked in engineering
    themselves.

11
  • Information
  • Lots of people have good labour market
    information
  • Lots of people produce careers information
  • But does it all filter through? And is it in the
    right format?

12
  • Sharing ideas
  • If someones done something really useful, or
produced say a set of video clips, can we
    share this more widely?

13
  • Experience
  • Everyone knows reading about something is second
best to seeing, hearing and doing
  • Visits to employers, colleges, specialist
    training facilities and so on
  • Whats the best age range 16? 14? 11?
  • And can we arrange more chats with apprentices,
    students, trainees etc?

14
  • NEETs
  • Target for the Region is to reduce from 8.2 to
    7 by 2010
  • There is variation across the region Barnsley,
NE Lincolnshire, York are below 7 already, but
    others face a considerable challenge
  • 18 million ESF support (2008-2010) to identify
gaps in local provision and address them

15
  • We dont want to get in the way of excellent work
    already taking place
  • Well help where we believe can add value or make
links eg information, advice and guidance,
employer engagement, raising the profile of work
    with NEETs (and preNEETs)

16
  • Employer engagement
  • Many people think employer engagement in
education means work experience, and nothing but
    work experience
  • What about
  • Interview practice?
  • Workplace visits?
  • Mentoring?
  • Projects and competitions?
  • Apprenticeships (including Young Apprenticeships)?

17
  • Its not just about diplomas
  • Obviously we need employers to help deliver
Diplomas, but employers can add value and context
    to the whole curriculum

18
  • Business in Schools
  • The Edge Foundation is a charity committed to
raising the profile and status of practical and
    vocational learning
  • Theyre spending their own money to promote
employer engagement, starting here in Yorkshire
    and Humber

19
  • Rosie Winterton MP
  • "Employers tell me that they are keen to get
involved in education, but many of them are
unsure how to get started. This new website fills
that gap between world of education and the world
of work. For the first time, everything employers
need to know about engaging in education can be
    found in the one place.

20
  • Activities
