Title: GT Summer Institute
1GT Summer Institute Trebuchet Physics
By William Haden-Chomphosy
2The Beginning
When I first thought about this class I thought
there would be a lot of building and not much
classroom work. Well I was wrong we had to learn
a lot about physics before even thinking about
building.
3Newton's Laws
For example Newtons 3 laws
First Law Inertia anything moving tends to want
to stay moving
Second Law ForceMass x acceleration
Third Law Every action has an equal and opposite
reaction
4Swimming experiment
We also did an experiment to see how long it took
for people to hit the water after stepping off
different heights. We learned that everything
drops at 9.8 m per second squared.
5Diving Graphs
6Experiments
We did many experiments including predicting when
two bowling balls would pass each other, how far
a projectile could be launched, and many others.
Throughout these experiments we learned about
velocity, acceleration, torque, and many others.
7List
Were on a budget well have to plan out what
were buying so we can manage.
8Hardware Store
But it all proved helpful when we went to the
hardware store to get supplies for our long
awaited Trebuchets.
9Working
Eventually we do start work on the trebuchets.
There is a lot of measuring and marking.
10Trebuchet Beginnings
As trebuchets begin to take shape were more and
more grateful for all the things we learned in
the first week.
11Building
We have been building for a while now and cant
wait to be finished.
12Finished Trebuchet
Heres our trebuchet it looks great.
13Style
We also added a bit of our own touch to our
trebuchet.
We even had our own ammunition rack
14Trebuchet Launch
We finally get to launch our trebuchets Ive been
waiting for this ever since I entered the class.
