What is a festival?

• A celebration of a religious event.
• A time to remember a religious occasion and to
  get together as a community or family.

Why do people have festivals?

• To celebrate the start of a new year.
• To celebrate the birth of a religious leader.
• To celebrate an important event in the history of
  the religion.
• A harvest festival of thanksgiving
• To end a fast.

PESACH

• Pesach or Passover remembers the time when the
  Jews escaped from slavery in Egypt in the time of
  Moses.
• The Jews passed over the Red Sea.
• The Angel of Death passed over the homes of the
  Jews during the tenth plague

How do Jews prepare for Passover?

• They clean the house of chametz (leaven)
• They spring clean the house
• The kitchen appliances are all cleaned
• They sell any chametz products to non-Jews
• They get out special crockery and cutlery
• They buy chametz free food
• Children play a game search for chametz to find
  ten pieces of bread with a candle and feather.

HOW IS PESACH CELEBRATED?

• The mother lights the candles to welcome peasch
• A Seder meal is eaten
• The symbolic foods remind the Jews of the exodus
  from Egypt
• The Hagadah book is read to tell the story
• The youngest child asks 4 questions

What questions does the youngest child ask?

• Why do we only eat matzot?
• Why do we eat bitter herbs?

What does the food stand for?

• The lambs blood smeared on the Jews doorposts. It
  is an ancient Jewish sacrifice

• The tears of the Jews/ salt water of the Red Sea
• Unleavened bread Jews had no time to let their
  bread rise, they had to escape quickly from Egypt.

Why do they drink red wine?

• Four cups of wine are drunk.
• These stand for the four ways that God spoke
  about setting the Jews free.
• Red wine is used as it is the colour of blood.
• Lambs blood was smeared on the doorposts before
  they left Egypt.

What else happens at Passover?

• Jewish families will go to the synagogue
• They will only eat chametz free food
• They say Hallel special hymns of praise
• They spend time with family and friends

Why is Pesach an important Jewish festival?

• It reminds the Jews of the exodus from Egypt
  God freed them from slavery
• It shows the Jews that God will always care for
  them they are the chosen people
• It shows that good will conquer evil
• It is an enjoyable festival that keeps the
  religion alive
• It educates Jewish children about their past
