C.U.R.E. IS.

• C.U.R.E. is a local organization the
  motivation behind it is to help in the awareness
  and fundraising of cancer.
• The first goal through C.U.R.E is to raise
  awareness about cancer to my fellow students. I
  put a notice in the bulletin asking for any
  students who have either had cancer or have been
  closely touched by cancer to please get a hold of
  me. I received about 5 students who eagerly
  wanted to speak. With my awareness team ready,
  the next step was to get a class to talk to.
  After talking to the Health and Safety Teacher we
  planned a date when her classes would be doing
  their cancer unit. In the end there were three
  of us talking to all six of her periods. It
  couldnt have gone better. The students were
  incredible listeners, and the three of us worked
  together like we had been doing it forever. My
  objective was to give the students a more
  personal look then just facts out of the book.
  There are a lot of students dealing with cancer
  at EHS and I wanted them to know I went through
  the same thing, and they are not alone. About two
  days after we talked to the classes, each student
  from each class wrote us all thank yous. They
  were awesome! One of the best gifts Ive ever
  received. For some students we had become an
  outlet for them to tell their stories, and for
  some the first time theyve talked about it.
  Mission accomplished.

And then

• My second objective is The Relay For Life
  Dance! The dance had been started about six years
  ago by my mothers Humboldt Fire District 1 Relay
  team. But last year no one was really willing to
  put it together, I loved it so much I decided to
  volunteer and chair the event. It had been so
  much fun and I knew I could make it better so I
  decided to do it again. This past year it was
  moved to the Eureka Inns Colonnade Room. Recent
  Future and the EHS Jazz Combo gave us their
  talent. A group of swing dancers came to give
  some lessons and dance the night away. Tinas
  Photography was taking beautiful portraits in the
  corner. And there were wonderful Dutch Raffle
  gifts that went quickly. People danced until
  midnight, until the bands had to leave. We
  raised close to three thousand dollars, I had
  hoped for at least four thousand, but any money
  works. I had an incredible time. This year I
  hope to put the Relay For Life Dance on again!
  Ive got tons of bands wanting to play and it
  looks like Ive got the American Cancer Society
  Club to be my Relay team, which receives the
  money, yay! Now I need a date!

And then!

• My third goal was to create a source of
  knowledge and information for both kids and
  adults. I decided to create a web page. The
  Humboldt Relay For Life Web Page! It has links
  such asRelay History, Picture Gallery,
  Volunteers, American Cancer Society info, CURE,
  and a lot more. Ive presented the site to ACS
  and they loved it and were excited. Ive also had
  many people get in contact with me hoping I would
  add their links to it as well. David Krezsni was
  my web master and helped in the construction of
  it. Its quite a piece of work!

• Its almost time for me to leave, graduation is
  coming up quick and Im in need of someone who is
  willing to take on C.U.R.E. I want desperately
  for C.U.R.E. to stay alive and Im hoping someone
  dedicated and passionate will want to take on the
  challenge!

Habits of the Mind!

• I believe that Ive grown the most in the areas
  of both Questioning and posing problems as well
  as finding humor.
• I think that in whatever I do I pose problems in
  one way or another but my senior year Ive made
  it an art.
• When things go wrong as they sometimes will.just
  laugh at Perry and its all good.

• 2.4 Deliver multimedia presentationsa. Combine

  information from a wide range of media, including
  films, newspapers, magazines, CD-ROMs, online
  information, television, videos, and electronic
  media-generated images.b. Select an appropriate
  medium for each element of the presentation.c.
  Use the selected media skillfully, editing
  appropriately and monitoring for quality.d. Test
  the audience's response and revise the
  presentation accordingly.
• 2.0 Speaking Applications (Genres and Their
  Characteristics) Students deliver polished
  formal and extemporaneous presentations that
  combine traditional rhetorical strategies of
  narration, exposition, persuasion, and
  description. Student speaking demonstrates a
  command of standard American English and the
  organizational and delivery strategies outlined
  in Listening and Speaking Standard 1.0.

Meeting The Standards

• In terms of delivering multimedia presentations
  Ive made numerous presentations using Power
  Point, including now. Ive learned the ins and
  outs of PP and how to present them to both small
  and large groups.
• I think everyone knows I dont have a problem
  with speaking and Im not shy. Ive spoke about
  boring software to my emotional experiences with
  cancer. Ive spoken to the Health and Safety
  classes as well as the city council.
