  • The teacher-centered model is known as Pedagogy 
  • For online education it is often replaced by
    student-centered model known as Andragogy

  • The learner is dependant. The teacher takes full
    responsibility for making all the decisions about
    what should be learned, how and when it should be
    learned, and whether it has been learned. The
    power and control lies exclusively with the
    instructor.
  • Learners enter into the educational activity with
    little or no experience that would be of value as
    a resource to learning. The pedagogical
    methodology is transmission of information
    (lectures, assigned readings, audiovisual
    presentations), not communication.
  • Learners enter into the learning activity with a
    subject-centered orientation to learning. They
    see the process as that of acquiring prescribed
    subject matter content.
  • This approach assumes that students become ready
    to learn what they must learn in order to advance
    to the next level (grade/class/etc). Readiness,
    in most cases, is a reflection of age.
  • Pedagogy assumes students are motivated primarily
    by external pressures (parents/teachers/competitio
    n for grades/consequences of failure.those sorts
    of things).

  • The learner is self-directing, centered on the
    ability to take responsibility for obtaining
    learning goals.
  • The Andragogical model assumes that the learner
    comes to the table with a great volume and
    quality of experience that can contribute to the
    classroom.
  • The adult comes to a point where he or she is
    ready to learn because they experience a need to
    know (or do something) in order to perform more
    effectively in some aspects of their lives.
  • Students enter an educational activity with a
    life-centered and task-oriented/centered (or
    problem-centered) orientation to learning.
  • The Andragogical model is based more on the fact
    that the more potent motivators are internal
    (self esteem, recognition, better quality of
    life, greater self-confidence, self
    actualization, etc.).

    parts to form a whole.
