Scenario description
  • A mobile node moves from domain A to domain B
  • The mobile nodes is running internet
    applications. Many of them are based on TCP which
    is sensitive to packet loss
  • Incoming packets will be dropped by the PAR
    during the handover because the mobile node has
    not connected to the PAR any more.

Limitation of FMIP and HMIP
  • FMIPHMIP are ideal mechanisms dealing handovers.
    However
  • FMIP requires PAR and NAR signaling exchange,
    while HMIP conceptually introduces a new network
    entity, Mobility Anchor Point (MAP).
  • These requirements decide that it is hard to
    deploy FMIP and HMIP in inter-domain handover
    scenarios.

Solution
  • Handover Preparation.
  • Layer 2 handover indication triggers the
    mobile node sending a transient Binding Update
    message to a home agent
  • Handover Execution.
  • The home agent buffers all packets destined
    to the mobile node
  • Handover Completion.
  • The mobile node sends a Binding Update with a
    new care-of address, and the home agent delivers
    the buffered packets to the mobile node.

New Mobility Option
The option can be included in Binding Update and
Binding Acknowledgement messages. When lifetime
expires, the home agent will purge all the
buffered packets for the MN.
