Use Local User Accounts in a Workgroup
  • Every computer is in a domain or a workgroup.
  • You must create the same account on every
    computer.
  • All changes must be made on every computer.

  • Two commonly used accounts
  • Administrator
  • Guest

Naming Conventions
  • Must be unique
  • 20 characters maximum
  • Invalid characters / \ , ? lt gt
  • Not case sensitive
  • Allow for duplicate employee names

Password Requirements
  • Always assign a password to the Administrator
    account.
  • Will the Administrator or the users control
    passwords?
  • Use passwords that are hard to guess.
  • Maximum length is 128 characters.
  • Use a combination of character types, such as
    Lp6g9.

User Profiles
  • Are a collection of folders and data
  • Store the current desktop environment,
    application settings, and personal data
  • Contain all network connections established at
    logon
  • Maintain a consistent desktop environment
  • Are created the first time a user logs on to a
    computer
  • Are stored as local user profiles on that computer

User Profile Operation
  • Each user of a computer gets the correct desktop
    environment.
  • C\Documents and Settings\user_logon_name folder.
  • A user profile contains the My Documents folder.
  • Users change their user profiles by changing
    their desktop settings.

Creating a Mandatory User Profile
  • Locate the Ntuser.dat file.
  • Create a user account.
  • Configure the desktop environment.
  • Rename Ntuser.dat to Ntuser.man.
  • Copy Nyuser.man to apply it to any other user or
    group.
