Atoms
  • Nucleus- center of the atom made up of protons
    and neutrons
  • Protons- positively charged particles in the
    nucleus.
  • Neutrons- particles with no charge found in the
    nucleus.
  • Orbit- Tracks around the nucleus that the
    electrons follow.
  • Electrons- negatively charge particles outside
    the nucleus.

3
Atomic Number and Mass
  • Atomic Number- The number of protons inside the
    nucleus
  • Atomic Mass- The sum of protons and neutrons in
    an atom.
  • (protons neutrons)
  • The number of neutrons does not always equal the
    number of protons

4
The Periodic Table of Elements
5
The Periodic Table of Elements
  • The Rows are called Periods
  • The columns are called Groups
  • Some groups have special names that categorize
    them
  • Group I- Alkali Metals
  • Group II- Alkaline Earth metals
  • Group VII- Halogens
  • Group VIII- Noble gases
  • Isotopes- Different combinations of neutrons for
    the same element.
  • Examples
  • C-12 Carbon 12 is elemental Carbon.
  • C-14 Carbon 14 has a higher atomic mass then C-12
    and is less stable.

6
Compounds and Molecules
  • Molecules- One or more elements that are
    chemically combined.
  • H2O is an example of a molecule.
  • Compound- One or more Molecules chemically
    combined.
  • H2SO4 is an example of a compound.
